I also think context needs mentioning. If I'm ramping up the intensity to get someone ready for a black belt test or a tournament, I'm rather less likely to ignore lacklustre effort than in general you-get-out-of-it-what-you-put-into-it training.

Having been coaching a long time I think I've made every possible mistake. But the one I regret most was ranting at someone who kept losing her balance on a meaningless turn in a meaningless kata. She dissolved into tears and told me she'd recently been diagnosed with MS. I've never felt such a prick before or since. I just ask for effort now and make it clear that it's the individual's responsibility to provide it, I just help them direct it. Gary Osu Gary, Yeah I can definitely see how that one would stay with you. We all get it wrong now and then and you can't always know what's going on in a students life. I guess I take that chance each day. I hope in my previous posts I'm not coming across wrong. I have had students with vision impairments, learning disabilities, involuntary spasms, flat feet and other obstacles over the years. I am happy to train the willing whatever the ultimate scope of their abilities. But once we've established what those abilities are, I hold them to their best and am arguably a hard task master. I don't apologise for that. Osu Noah

Not wrong at all Noah. Each coach has their own style and ultimately if your students make progress and keep coming, you're doing great.
I used to run a club of 50, now I have half a dozen. I often wonder if moving towards a 'better' coaching style actually cost me members that LIKE to be driven on.

Probably not half as many that left because they didn't! Maybe I'm not sure which letter of the Greek alphabet it is, but there is definitely one personality type that likes to be pushed and the early dojo were full of them. I'm pretty self-motivating, so when people rant at me I just think "Twat" and if anyone tries to beat spirit into me it's going to end badly. But for some ... I don't know. Gary
