Just checked my bank account, right before bed (which I won't do anymore LOL!) and see that a check I deposited, had NSF, aka bounced!
I only deposited two tuition checks about a week ago..I rarely deposit checks since everything is electronic these days.
This just happened today, so online, my bank isn't showing me which check it is...however, the amount it's for, it wouldn't be the other member anyway. The other member, he checked his bank and says he has more then enough funds in it. I sent the other member a long message on fb since it's almost 130 am over here.
Not only was I "charged" the amount of the check he wrote me, but it looks like $50 in bank fees. Looks like a teller fee, his bank's fee, and my bank fee LOL.
I'm not going to be poor over this, but it's the principle of it that has me riled up. I wouldn't dare making a check out to any of my instructors that I couldn't cover!
I already posted a message on my dojo's facebook page letting them know this is a warning, if this happens again, I won't accept checks from any of them anymore. I will also only allow cash from this individual from now on, once it's fixed.
Just wondering if any of you instructors have had to deal with this much, and how you go about it? This is honestly the first time it has happened to me. Osu!

I've had it times, along with all the puzzled expressions and the "I can't understand it, there's plenty in the account" blah blah blah
I let anyone make one mistake - although they have to pay any charges my bank charges me - but if they do it twice, that's just taking the p***.
They're out.

I'm definitely not going to allow this member to pay by check again. Thankfully I had enough in my checking account by luck to cover it. I say this because I usually only keep enough in checking to cover my bills and spending money I need, I keep the rest in savings. I didn't know my bank would take it out of checking since I deposited it in savings, guess I learned something new the hard way (I rarely learn the easy way!). I am going to give this member the benefit of the doubt until I speak to the member. Now I'm worked up laying in bed...wide awake, wanting an explanation at ten to 2 a.m. Anticipation is a... sometimes. Osu!

Oh dear ...
I used to do that (when I first started teaching) Now I allow myself about half an hour when I get home to think about the previous / coming session, then switch back to the normal chaos of family life.
It's rarely worth losing sleep over.

LOL I was already up late! I found out at almost 130 about this...now I just can't sleep! The check issue just riled me up a bit, not the only reason why I'm up late, that fault is my own! Osu!

if you go talk to your bank they can and may waive any fees. They do that all the time so long as you aren't always bouncing checks. Everyone makes mistakes, especially if he has a shard account. My husband will often spend money thinking we have it, when there is a check out fora bill. I have over draft protection so the bill gets paid but it costs me 30

Bank won't budge and I have to wait until I can see what check it is for certain. Be nice if I find out by Friday, but might not be until next week since I was told it can take up to 10 days. Now it's a waiting game of just seeing a picture of the check so I know what check it is for sure, after that, I can go from there! Osu!

We have a returned check fee.. i think it's $25. I've only had to charge it twice in 3 years. One I never got to collect on... the other was from a very prominate family here. I was shocked when it bounced but she paid the returned check fee + the monthly tuition.

When I was a student, I only paid one person with a check - Shihan Lowe and I ALWAYS made sure there was enough money in my account to cover his tution ($35 / month). There were a few times were money was tight and I told him I need a few more days to pay. He never gave me a hard time about that. God bless him.. RIP.

I'll gladly wait a few days, even a few weeks, etc. for someone to pay me if they come to me in private and tell me money is tight. I'd prefer this any day over somebody writing me bad check! Osu!

Amen to that, PO1; what I fear may be my undoing as an instructor is being lenient with due date. I usually allow up to a month, but we have a decent amount of organizational events and such that I encourage people to go to...when the two come close to overlapping, I'll let dues slide.
...that said, I learned the lesson that if dues aren't paid, you don't test. I let a student get away with testing without class dues being paid (test dues were paid, I think...actually, I'm not even sure that was the case -I'll have to check). He ended up quitting right after testing (but before his rank was actually awarded) and the quarter dues were never collected...

I have on free class offered a week that a no paying student can attend. However no kumite, no kata is taught, and I no longer teach it . Which means if anybody ever wants to grade they have to be a paying student. I don't prorate tuition, and I have a cut off date of 3 weeks at the beginning of a new semester for new students joining. This is because it makes no sense for somebody to join only for a month and the. Expect me to prorate tuition for them when it's relatively cheap enough! I still have had some students expect me to prorate and I told them no. Most students don't see the big picture of costs involved In operating a dojo and heaven forbid an instructor expecting to make profit ! Osu!

Newbs are the exception; they pay right away --not getting burned by someone with no skin in the game.
I let them watch and try a class (I'm don't care too much if you watch one, take one...most end up jumping right in).
OSU!

Old thread, but going to a particular branch and cashing the check is not an option? Most banks do it for non-customers and it's a good way to avoid a fee and two weeks of waiting.

I took care of the problem and solved it. Many banks now, at least in my area, are starting not to cash checks, however, years ago, I used to go that route myself. Osu!
