OSU,
When do you use your shin when striking with Mawashi Geri?
When do you use the ball of your foot?
My dojo has the beginner at least strike with the ball of their foot. I find this difficult to do, especially with low kicks. I have seen a lot of shin kicks in tournament fights, and am curious... I think I'd rather do shin kicks low.

I like the shin or instep for low round kicks, but for middle kicks occasionally I'll work the ball of the foot. I had a former instructor who was a big advocate of using the ball of the foot for middle round kicks, as it has great penetration potential and hurts a heck of a lot.

Ball of the foot is not good for gedan mawashi...ball of the foot is best for chudan.
It really depends on distance and angle. I know that doesn't answer much but it's the truth. For gedan mawashi I'll use the shin or a combination of the shin and instep. I only use just the instep for gedan mawashi when I'm playing around in kumite. For a real fight I'd never do it or train my students to.
For body it's shin unless I want to kick at the liver or torso I might use chosoku/ball of foot. For neck it's instep, head is instep...try using all shin on the head, good luck unless the person is on all 4s and you're standing! Osu!

I just use the shin and instep. For low kick I want to connect with the middle of the shin, then as the kick gets higher the striking point naturally gets lower on the (kicking) leg.
I never aim with chusoku. Too many kicked elbows in the painful past.

Using the shin or ball of the foot (chusoku) is two different kicks in my opinion using chusoku requires a slightly different hip movement, less hip movement in fact than the shin or instep. I apply the chusoku version more like an angled Kin geri. It's easier to demonstrate than explain

he REALLY enjoys demo'ing that one on me Gary, it won't take much arm twisting to get him to do it............ ;D lol!
definitely the shin for gedans, especially if kicking downwards through the thigh.

powerof0ne made me look back at my own post and realize I meant less instep like in a high kick and more like the ankle area connecting the shin and instep area for some of my low kicks. To me I like using that area best for inside low kicks rather than the shin as then I can still keep a little distance. I'm still somewhat in the "Stinks" category though, so take that for what it's worth.

Gedan- shin
Chudan- shin or chusoko but I prefer shin
Jodan- haisoko(the area right below the shin but above your foot)to shin.
I also agree with Iain that due to the hip movements the chusoko variation is almost its own kick altogether.
Osu!

If I'm close enough, obviously more shin, further away, more ankle and instep area like you're describing...often with a bit of the shin, too. I do agree with Senshido that chosouku chudan mawashi geri is a little bit different. During my shito ryu days this was about the only mawashi geri I used and I got it down good..the only one I used to use was instep for jodan mawashi. Time to start working on my chosoku chudan mawashi geri again a lot, again...I do have my students practice it quite a bit, though. I can't imagine gedan mawashi with chosoku being at all effective and I'd be scared about breaking toes, or at least stubbing them. I'll be honest, I have never really tried it but I'm fairly certain for most people (unless they're students of real Okinawan styles that condition their toes for years to kick with) it wouldn't work. I prefer to strike with my shin because I can generate a lot of power with that type of gedan mawashi. If I could choose, it would be with my shin every time. For baseball bat breaks I use my shin, I prefer power over speed (instep) breaks any day . Wow, I prefer power? Who would have guessed...powerof...Chikara (power) dojo? Osu!

I still have a black toe nail from the last elbow I kicked. If you set it up right, it can be very effective. I have just not found the right combination to use against experienced fighters yet. Osu!

I quite like the chusoku version if you can turn your opponent and do it in the gut.. also les chance of getting an elbow in the way then

Maybe it's how I set up my chusoku mawashi geri, but I can't remember the last time I got elbowed doing it. Granted, I have elbowed others that have attempted it on me ...it's all how you set it up ...which is much easier to "show," then try to explain. Osu!

Honestly, in person would be best to "show" the intricacies of setting kicks up. Osu!
