Yeah I can see that. The guy I am learning under only seems to work on effective stuff. No flashy stuff.

Cool, did the stick training flow into the knife training well? I watched some stuff online and it seemed like there were some niffty drills to use a blade. On the Discovery show on escrima the final drill was awesome, it turned into a stab/slash fest.

A little bit but the knife drills/skills are a bit different from the stick.
You can get a lot closer in stick fighting. Knife you want as far away from you as possible so there are different set ups/blocks.

Knife you want as far away from you as possible so there are different set ups/blocks. If the other guy has a knife, I want to be at least a block away. Here's a vid that goes the opposite way, elbow blocking against a knife. I like this guy's work, but this particular technique is cutting it close.

Seems good in theory.....like most things. I stick to the 21ft rule, and a handgunx2. I think I would try to control the wrist/weapon and get as close as possible Krav Maga style. It would be interesting to see some practice knife sparring between the trainers.

His blocks seemed like a good way to transition to a hold.

Yeah, there's a lot of that in Silat as well. It is pretty natural to grab and hold when fighting up close.

Looks like I'm going to try out kendo tomorrow instead. The kali instructor near me all of a sudden is hard to get a hold of. I'll also be doing Iaido too since kendo is only taught once a week, and Iaido a different day of the week, it's pretty cheap minus the cost of bogu...but bogu last years, usually. Osu!

Cool! Let us know how you like it. I picked up my bogu and iaito in Osaka many years ago. Not knowing where to go, I picked up a Kendo magazine, called one of the advertizers in my halting Japanese, and soon enough, the president of the company picks me and my office mate up, takes us out for Shabu Shabu, and hooks me up with the gear. On subsequent a trip, the guy introduces us to his father, a calligraphy a master, who then paints us some pics right on the spot. I could not believe the hospitality extended to me, a complete stranger. Blown away to this day.

My family is Sikh. I have some in India, UK, and the US. My dad stopped wearing his hair long when he was 14 and moved to Glasgow. To this day he still wears his hair short and is clean shaven. Anyway, just the other day I was looking up Sikh martial arts and came across these two videos about Sanatan Shastarvidiya. I see a good bit of similarity to escrima/kali/arnis. Hopefully there will be a successor to the system to carry it on.

Thanks, Po1. I've seen seen vids of that Sikh instructor before, Paul. Really interesting stuff, though I doubt he'd ever get past a metal detector with all that hardware. ;D BTW, for you folks in the UK, Niddar Singh is participating in a 4 day seminar along with Pat O'Mally (Arnis) and Maul Mornie (Silat) in July. I took Maul Mornie's Silat seminar when he was in NY recently. Loads of information to keep you busy.

I don't know where you live Hokuto, but if you can attend one of Maul's seminars you will get a lot out of it. I've been to three and he never ceases to deliver.
