I've been getting compliments when I go to my school's boxing club gym.
I've kicked harder and faster than the MMA guys and I complimented by the boxing and MMA coach that my boxing punches are very quick comparatively to other people's punches.
So yes, there people out there that actually know what Kyokushin (so far, of all people that ask me what style I've taken 1 out of say 30 knew what Kyokushin was) means.
I'm not your skinny kid that shouts all the time and breaks boards.

yeah, I don't tell people that I practice karate unless they know me or they ask. Americans have a "wax on wax off" mentality and, as I have previously stated in other posts, think that the only martial arts worth any salt are what Joe Rogan and Mike Goldberg tell them. I have had a few who were interested in "fighting" and weren't familiar with Kyokushin or Enshin. I have pointed them to Kyokushin vids on Youtube and they never show up. I have had a few guys ask if I was the gym's MT instructor when they have seen me working out. I tell them that I teach Kyokushin, not MT. i think in their minds that they have already discounted me because MT is the be-all-end-all. Whatever. People will believe what they want to believe. Speaking of "Wax On, Wax Off"... Just a few years ago, a friend and I who both fight knockdown, were asked by our instructor to give an interview for our local newspaper. The newspaper was interviewing us about our up coming Superfights tournament that year. When the gentleman showed up to do the interview, he was very suprised to see that what we were doing was quite different than what he invisioned karate to be. He was used to kroddy, I guess. Anyway, he interviewed us and was very surprised at some of our responses to the questions. We were just being our selves an trying to get across what knockdown karate and full contact competitions were about. Even though our words in the interview tell a different story. The title said everything it needed to say about how people feel about karate. I walked in to the office two days after the interview was done to see my picture on the fron page of the paper, with the title "Wax On, Wax Off". I'm sorry, but "LOL"...no, I take that back --LMAO ;D!

They can go ahead and think that though. I'd rather be underestimated. :}
Though hey, one thing about karate kid- at least the tournament had actual contact!

I've lost that feeling. If people approach me to ask about training then start twatting around I just smile and change the subject. Or offer a free class. That normally shuts them up. Gary ahhh the offer of a free class always shuts someone up. Only one guy ever took me up on it, and he never came back. and the funny thing is we didnt even spar during that lesson.

Until Knockdown is shown on television, (not much chance of that) we will always have the smart guys who think its all like what you see in the movies

Well there is still the unknown element of martial arts that people are not too sure of. There is a bloke who lives opposite me, now he has no drive for his car and likes to park in what he calls "HIS" space. He is a bit of a hard man and if anyone dares park in "HIS" space he puts them right! But he has never spoken to me if i have to park there. My wife happened to be chatting to him the other day about the neighbours etc, when he suddenly said "well i wouldn't mess with your husband he is a karate expert!! You don't know what you're dealing with there"

Until Knockdown is shown on television, (not much chance of that) we will always have the smart guys who think its all like what you see in the movies I agree. Very unlikely, unfortunately. The public will have a hard time eating this up as a new thing figuring people won't know the difference between kickboxing and knockdown. And kboxing died out in the 90s. Even though Muay Thai is the praise, it won't get attention by itself. Same with grappling arts. Judo is a great art, but on its own, to be honest, it looks pretty boring from a sports standpoint compared to striking arts and MMA. Boxing's popularity isn't going anywhere. It's still alive, but it's not an advertised sport like it was in my parent's days.

Well I think the view of the general public is better for Karate than MMA. I don't know how many times the words Douche, Meathead, Unintelligent, Testosterone Junkies, Warmongers and similar have been associated to that sport. Seems like some of the viewers of MMA are getting labeled as the new "Nascar" subgroup. Can't wait to see fat, middle aged guys with their bellies exposed at MMA events.... I guess I will take my pajamas, an occasional "Wataaa!" any day.

In public I don't generally talk about training, unless asked. I will answer and talk with someone who is actually interested in karate and why I do train. When they are a twat, I go find someone else to talk to. Just about everybody who I have conversed with about karate, twat or not, I invite to come to class, regular or kumite depending what they are interested, I think only 1 or 2 have actually shown up. I tell the we are nice to new people, no need to be afraid.
Either I am not a good marketer or I scare them off with the truth of what we do? Although most are probably just lazy and think MMA is the only way to go. UFC that is some good marketing in action.

OSU, thanks! Man, I look really spaced out in that photo. Truth be told, I was FREEZING COLD, heh! And just back from class. It usually takes me a little while to un-scatter my brain. OSU!
