That annoys me when some people in the same school or org get graded quickly and aren't that good, but people that have put in the hours and time and are good enough to grade are kept back for a longer period. Is it a money thing?

It can be money and politics...which can also be connected at times . Years ago when I was in Hayashi Ha Shito Ryu Kai, I witnessed somebody get graded past somebody that was much better...by Hayashi Soke himself. The person that was graded to hachidan made a looooot more money for the organization..and coincidentally was graded to hachidan before the other person who didn't make as much money for the org...was still a nanadan. I also had a sensei that would purposely keep the good fighters at a lower rank so they could win longer in tournaments..whereas the non-fighters would get promoted at a higher rank, quicker. Pretty stupid, huh? Fighters have a higher standard whereas non-fighters get promoted easy? LOL..usually just the opposite! Osu!

It's a real truth that the best coaches get on with turning out great students and don't bother slagging off others. I've slagged people in the past when I wanted to explain decisions I've made. I regret it now. Gary Exactly. We all have experiences where we hear someone we respected or admired slag off at someone and immediately they appear less significant. There is no point to talking about anyone badly, especially someone who taught you so much. Gene LeBell is a good example. He has experience with SO MANY leading martial arts 'legends' and no doubt with his background can take one look at them and sum them up. But he never speaks badly about anyone. He just tries to find some positive in them, no matter what a dill they are, and focuses on that. You never know the whole story behind someone's comments about another. Things are never as they seem. And sometimes, especially when one is privy to a lot of information, it is okay just to not say anything.

Osu.
When the Jon Blumings "revelations" about Sosai first broke, I remember there being a shock wave across the Kyokushin community. My then instructor put all the issues to bed quite nicely I thought.
He said "Is what you've done real?"
I just remember nodding, and never spared the controversy another thought.
I'm not discounting lineage, it's important. But ultimately is what you're doing real? Does it work? Karate goes back further and deeper than even Sosai Oyama.
Over the years I've sat around a lot of tables sober and not so sober and listened to war stories. The very best men I know embellish a little. If Sosai did take liberties on a few details and I emphasise "IF", he undoubtedly earned the right to.
Osu.
