Sometimes we have huge successes and great leaps forward, but sometimes we just grind on KBO as Churchill used to say. This thread is for recording those small victories, those moments where something that's been irritating you or getting you down about your training came good, or where you had a really good class, or managed a particularly sweet combination or whatever. So, I've been fed up with my mawashi geris for ages. Just horrible. They're still pretty horrible to be honest, but tonight I actually threw half a dozen or so into the pads that felt reasonably powerful. Not a big deal, but a small step. I give myself a Mitch

My small step for the week:
I have been working on sweeping/kicking out my opponents front leg as he steps. Finally after class on Tuesday I was able to time it pretty regularly to what would be a successful sweep. (I don't usually take people down in class, just get the set up and execution correct)

My left arm is swolen this morning and it was either You or Joe that made it that way Somehow I managed to end up with the "Thinnest" sabaki pads See ya Saturday Monty

Good to hear you've felt some progress Mitch. Sometimes just relaxing a bit and letting it flow makes all the difference. If people don't like holding the pads for you that's a good sign that the impacts starting to come You'll pay him back next time Monty ... Gary

I felt reasonably happy with my white belt kata for the first time tonight, both with and without partner. Lots still to work on, but it felt like it was starting to come together tonight Mitch

Yeah I hear you on that too. Just when you think you have the Enshin Kata figured out there is another little nuance to tame.
I discovered another one in the Brown Belt Kata that was a game changer.

Nice to know others are working and improving! Though mine are a long wayfrom nuances and more in the, "My feet go where now?" phase Still, as long as they are making those small steps in the right direction Mitch

I have a mind that wanders terribly. When counting in japanese for something, i will lose my train of thought and totally forget how to count. My mind goes completely blank and it is not the numbers becasue sometimes if we are doing a count to 20, I get the first 10 fine, then the second 10 I have the brain cramp on. Same thing with the dojo kun. Just couldn't get through it. I tried and tried several times. White belts could do it, but I cant. Then I get so emarrased and nervouse for the next time and I mess up even more.
So I put the dojo kun up on the walls everywhere and everytime I saw it, I would say it out loud.
Last Sunday, when doing a fast 20 count, I just closed my eyes and imagined the numbers flashing in my head and I finished the set many times during class. Then at the end of Tuesday's class, sensei asked for volenteers for the dojo kun, I said OSU. She said 'Really?' and for the first time in front of everyone, I said the kun with just one mistake and a couple of hesitations.
Funny though, I can only do it with my eyes closed, i guess so I dont get distracted.

I've been trying to work hard on Blue Belt Kata these last two weeks. The days I had put aside for it were overtaken by events and lost, but I've managed a little time every day since Friday despite it being holiday time with the kids. As a result there's some definite progress, but I need a lot more! As a result anyone at Sundown Adventure Park tomorrow who notices two happy children playing whilst dad does Enshin Kata and mum rolls her eyes should come over and say hi! Mitch
