Hello Everyone,
As far as my personal training program is concerned, I find the optimal value in
combining old school training methods with modern training tools.
A couple years back, I bought a book on Hojo Undo, the Okinawan Karate method
of strength and conditioning. Typically, this is not a commonplace tool for Kyokushin
practitioners, but for the Okinawan Karate practitioners of Uechi Ryu, Goju Ryu, Shorin
Ryu etc. I would like to add this tool to my toolbox to improve my grip strength,
grappling specific strength etc. If anyone has this tool by chance and would like to sell
it, please reply to this message.
Osu!

Have you tried a welder shop? That was a suggestion from Dent. I have one that was donated made out of PVC pipe. While it's not durable for the turning it works well for the overhead pressing movement.

For grip strength meant to ask if you have given chi ishi a try?
The kongoken seems to work well for some of the movements related to turning the head for a takedown, like taking a bull by the horns and forcing him down. At least that's my limited experience with them.

In the dojo I train at, there are portraits of old time karate masters, some shirtless, striking bad-ass poses. Honestly, any athlete today would make them look like poseurs. I understand the desire for going traditional, but understand some of the traditional equipment was stuff that was pretty commonplace in Okinawa at the time: pottery; rocks; bundles of bamboo. Basically, they made do with whatever was at hand. You can build your own Kongo ken with 2 inch diameter pipe sections and angles. No welding required. You can use a trap bar. Personally, towel grip pull-ups and kb/db work fine.
