www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ks-_Mh1QhMcTED talk regarding power posing and the effects on our body's testosterone and cortisol. TL;DR - Open stance, power posing gives temporary boost to testosterone and lowers cortisol - Open stance, power posing also gives slight increase to risk taking - Perceived strength in more open stance - Mind changes body, but also body can change mind (Working out, feeling healthy and fit, more confidence). With respect to kumite: - fighting someone that has an Open Kamae vs. Close Kamae. - Occupying more space or mat. Stalking your opponent. - I know it's been mentioned that the outcome of a fight can be determined by looking at the first round and the fighter that controls that mat/ring space. With respect to posing. - Yoga? - Kata? The 'feeling' of kata? The feeling of perceived power in Kata. Would be interesting to measure the testosterone of an individual after performing Kata before going in to the ring vs. someone that does padwork etc. - Maori Haka dancing? With respect to body changing the mind- Effects of training (Weight and Karate) on an individual for the positive. Karate is positive character build? - More confidence to deal with adversity. Just a bit of interest thoughts.. Regards.

Well in short physical training builds confidence. Confidence will make you feel better and more able to deal with things. Win/Win

I saw that Ted talk a while back. It is well known that confident folks look confident in their manner. I didn't know you could fake confidence and in the process become confident, and experience all its physiological/psychological benefits.
Otoh, kata, unless it is well grounded in reality (real world applications), can in extreme circumstances leave you unprepared.

It's a much neglected topic and it's easy to understand why. The ones who stick at it until they become champions or coaches usually already exhibit this confidence so in a way dismiss the necessity to train it. They tend to expect everyone to feel as they do and are often bemused when they don't.
Well worth practicing. I was coached once by one of my former officers on how to enter the room and how to sit during an interview as those vital first impressions make all the difference.
I got the job.

I've just been investigating the positions that could be defined as 'power poses': - Expansively taking up a large space of desktop - Standing up and leaning over a table - Opening limbs expansively and sprawling - Sitting with arms spread out around the chair next to you Now I know body language is important, but really, these poses just scream 'I'm a massive twat' don't they?

Confident twats are particularly unwelcome on public transportation. If you ever had to share an armrest with one of these guys on a bus, train or plane. . . . A little humility can make the ride more comfortable for everyone.

Tried it on the Mrs. She went in the kitchen and when she came back in I was sprawled in a power pose. She just laughed and told me I made the place look (even more) untidy. Then I tried standing in a hands-on-hips power pose between sets and the lad told me I looked gay. Not sure how much further I'm going to take this experiment.
