My worst reflex action is to automatically do a gedan barai if I see an opponent's leg move when I'm sparring. I know I should be blocking low kicks with a shin but my hand automatically wants to gedan barai!
Any tips on how to overcome this?

One of my favourite strategies as a young fighter was to kick the legs until my opponent started taking their hands down to block, then whip a kick into the head.
We'll do a few more drills on this. It'll be good for everyone.

aye, I use the low to high switch when someone drops their hand, a few shins on the head should stop you Ros It's very hard to stop reflex action though, its very hard to break a habit... drill, drill, drill to me is the only answer, and even then when you are under pressure a "habit" can pop up

Ros, this is an automatic action that many, many folks have. The biggest problem I see when I watch it happening is a penchant for some to not only block with an augmented gedan barai, but also a hop backwards or to the side and locking of the knee joint. Very often, I have seen an immediate ushiro geri flatten someone who has this reaction. I have to agree with Senshido, drill baby drill!! I am sure Gary will have a Phenomenal practice set for this, and I would love to see it.

In Seido Juku karate point sparring, after I throw a combo, I have a reflex action: stand on one leg and pause -- for what I don't know -- which is OK, not good, for Seido where gedan mawashi geri (low round kicks) are not allowed, but when I do that in the Kyokushin-based Dashaa MMA karate dojo or while freestyle kickboxing at the BJJ gym, I get my base let kicked out, getting knockdown.
We in Seido do allow "light" head punches, but the assessment of what's light vary from person to person or the week. When I see a face wide open, I do have a reflex action to punch that head. This past Sunday I was told I punched a bit too hard on a shodan's head, wearing headgear. (I though that was rather overly careful of him: reminding me that I don't want to injure anyone - duh- that's true, but he should know by now my control's good and one feedback was enough for me to dial it down for him).

I had a bad habit of that too. I got lucky though and my Senpai helped me after class for weeks. Just doing combos and not letting me use Gedan Barai and only use Sune Uke for leg kicks.
