Cool! I like the DIY kit. It reminded me of how those long distance native runners would fashion something similar from discarded tire treads. On minimalist shoes in general, I was thinking about old running shoe that you haven't thrown away yet, the ones that have lost support and springiness, or old Addidas Sambas or Converse Chucks. You pretty much have to adopt a barefoot running technique otherwise you'll injure yourself with these.
