Here is sort of a rambling of why MMA has lost its luster with me, at least for watching MMA events:
I was a big MMA fan from the first UFC to the hay day of Pride but I was also into watching boxing, kickboxing events, knockdown karate, etc. What's changed for me over the years is I've become less of a MMA fan because a large part of the MMA fan base has ruined it for me.
It seems as if more MMA fans talk like they can fight that have never trained vs. boxing fans. I don't know too many people that watch some boxing events that get together with friends in their backyards, living rooms, garage and try to start boxing each other like I do with far too many idiots that watch TUF, UFC, etc. and try to reenact moves on themselves and then go around bragging that they're a boxer..but there are "cage fighters" and "UFC fighters" that have no training that tell everyone they are. At least a handful of girls tell me every year their boyfriend is a "UFC fighter" and I roll my eyes asking really, what's his name, where does he train? To which I get blank stares..maybe a name if I'm lucky.
What makes things worst is the "www", "internet", youtube, etc. has videos so some of these clowns watch videos with no actual instruction at all thinking they're trained. I've called out people like this in the past, and some of them are moderators on MMA forums.
The bottom line is while I love MMA rules there are more then a few bad seeds that have ruined MMA for me.
I probably spent $500 USD or so a year, sometimes more, to watch MMA events but over the last 1-2 years that cost has gone down to maybe $40 because I find myself more happy not to have to deal with the idiotic fans. Maybe I'm in the minority but this is a big problem for me that has ruined MMA events for me.
With all of that being said I love allowing "more", I like submission grappling a lot, I like striking, and I like throws/take downs.
The respect and camaraderie that I see many times more then not in knockdown tournaments and usually a respectful audience makes it much more enjoyable for me. Probably why Daido Juku has such an alure for me is a combination of MMA and "budo" but the opportunities for it in North America are zero to none.
I'm very happy that the current generation has more opportunities to make money fighting in MMA but MMA has lost one of its hugest supporters. I was a guy that would order two MMA pay per views at the same time if they were both going on so I could DVR one while I watched the other (did this with affliction and UFC a couple of years ago).
Rambling over.
Osu!
