I always found that watching a video of it being performed and writing down each move in my own words helped get it into my head.
When trying to learn it I like building up the kata a few moves at a time. For example practice moves 1,2 & 3 for a while then add moves 4, 5 & 6 then when you can remember them add moves 7,8 & 9 and so on.

Learn the basic movements first. Once you have those down, every time you practice, try to pick just 1 or 2 things to concentrate on. There are loads of things to choose from (ie. muscle tension timing, drawhand, body rotation, straight spine, breathing, tempo, speed, tailbone position, etc). It's often tempting to try to fix too many things at once. Focusing on one at a time means you'll always be making small but measurable improvements which will add up.

I break kata down at home and work through a section at a time. Eventually i start to put them together so i can fluidly go through the whole thing. But i'm no expert at kata.....i'm probably in the same league as Wullie ;D I do get there in the end though, and once a kata sticks i've got it. Nailed Yantsu in my stockroom at work, now just got to get Tsuki no kata now!

I like to break them down.
I learn segments at a time and then master those parts and then I can put it all together.
That is how I learned the more advanced Enshin Kata.

I like to break them down. I learn segments at a time and then master those parts and then I can put it all together. That is how I learned the more advanced Enshin Kata. That's how I learned and how I teach them. I often times only do 3-4 steps in a kata at a time...review, review, and more review before going onto the next 3-4 steps. Osu!

Repetition is the key. The more you do the kata, the more comfortable you will feel.

the way I was taught was... 1st move 10 times, then add the next move and do both together 10 times, then add the next and do all 10 times.. and so on
