OSU. I have a question for you wonderful folks. When I was a wee brown belt many years ago, I was taught a kata that included breaking. It was called kata Nohai. I have looked all over for it and have only come up with a bad version on Youtube. www.youtube.com/watch?v=zljd0MyFTpAHas anyone learned it? Is there another name for the kata? I am trying to remember how it goes, but it has been decades since I last practiced it. I appreciate any help. Thanks. OSU!

Nope, but the Rohai, kata, yes...and that kata in that video at times almost resembles parts of the Rohai kata. I'm pretty sure Yoshukai practices Rohai shodan-sandan, but could be wrong?
In Shito ryu when I did it, we did the rohai series of kata.
However, Nohai, never heard of it, and I used to know around 50 kata during my shito ryu days. Osu!

OSU. Thanks PO1! It was Kata Rohai. My old Sensei taught it to me, but he must have messed up the pronunciation. OSU.

They're interesting kata for the "gankaku dachi", tsuru ashi dachi and sagi ashi dachi which are all ways of saying "crane stance." The difference between the different rohai IMHO is so minor that it's not worth knowing all of the rohai. A kata I like is chinto, which also has some similar stances . Here's a version of rohai that I like, and the karateka performing it has very good form! Osu!

I know a kata called (not sure of the spelling) Matsumara Rohai It's just another version of the rohai in Matsumura shorin ryu, I believe. They also have a mastumura Basai (Pasai, etc.) that is widely known. I also believe it's all a result of Hohan Soken en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hohan_SokenOsu! p.s. In another life Karate history and karate was my life, I have other priorities now .

Our versions our quite a bit different than any of the videos above. Our Rohai comes from Chito Ryu. Osu!

I'd be curious to see the Yoshukai versions, I honestly haven't done any of the rohai kata from shito ryu in many years. What I do remember is the same pattern, was evident for all three. I never did the Matsumura Rohai but I know others in shito ryu do and there is also a Tomari Rohai. The Matsumura and Tomari Rohai are very old kata, and close to the "roots" of it all, if you're into that sort of thing. Rohai also has a heavy shuri/shorin lineage which a karate nerd like myself notices right away when I see it performed....why you don't see a Naha Rohai If you actually understand the differences that I'm talking about, give yourself a gold star LOL! (*Naha Te congruent to Goju Ryu). Osu!

The link below shows the Chito Ryu version of Rohai Dai. Our version is almost identical in movement, but the tempo and power is a little different in the Yoshukai version. www.youtube.com/watch?v=6_0Cif5AGpY

A bit different to my shito ryu days and just goes to show you just because shito and chito are close in spelling doesn't mean they're almost the same ! I say that in jest, because over the years I've had people think they're the same, mix them up, etc. Osu!
