So folks here we are. Stage 1 - Hitting weight has been achieved although having two Christmas do's in a few days has put a tinny dent in that I know I can enter tournaments at LW and be sure to hit weight. Reaching this goal is great but has one dramatic effect on my motivation - the removal of a very tangible, measurable target so I can see the next stage if anything being harder. The focus for the next 6 weeks is to compete in Scotland, after this I will be able to see if my niggly but long term issues such as my thumb will stop me competing or just be a nuisance I have to train and fight around. It already stop me doing heavy bag work without gloves but I then do 2 min on each hand on the makiwari to condition them. As per my other training diary this will be patchy but I do keep a written version and may one day write it all out - unless of cause I fail miserably in Scotland and have to retireā¦but then hey it could be a 'For god sake don't train like this' booklet to hand out to would be fighters ;D

That is good news TMD.
Hopefully the thumb heals up soon rather than later.

You and me both Senshido it's funny I don't feel ready for seniors yet.... Probably will afterwards Would normally have trained tonight but of to meet a really experienced fighter and get some advice on my program. Usually have monday out so joined in my own class and did about an hour or so of general karate big mitt and sparing work looking at different ways to deal with different styles of fighter.

Trained hard and had some good sessions over Chrimbo, no work to get in the way was a bonus but it was ballanced with over indulgence so went from 69.7kG Christmas eve to 73.5kG this AM, hate to think how heavy I'd be if I'd not trained!! But hey here we are and here we go am keeping a log of my training but in short I won't be doing any more gym work after this week or sparing which is a bit of a bummer as I've not got a lot in but I'm a bad healer so would rather be a little rusty than battered!

Aw man have i been ridiculous at keeping this up to date! I am not really training for anything right now just ticking along so the weekly plan goes something like this: Monday teaching so generally off. Tuesday General Karate Class, what ever comes. Wednesday Weight Training, have for many years focused on Heavy (for me) and low reps but am about to start a program based around the 5x5 program so Squats, Bench Press, Rows, OH Press and Dead lift. Thursday Knockdown class Friday Weights or off depending how I feel (listening to my body more at the mo than normal. Saturday 2 x 30 min heavy bag blasts; 30 seconds on 30 seconds off - 1 session am 1 session pm Sunday AM Knockdown class - as much as I can and still teach PM Weight training or off - never allowed to be off both Friday and Sunday but so long as I've done 2 sessions I'm happy to drop one if I don't have the drive for it. Will start ramping back up to included morning core sessions and 3 x 30 min blasts etc once I am within 12 weeks of the next tournament, not sure when that will be though. Got a number of aches and pains that the strength training is helping with as a lot of my issues relate to weak tendons so not training is worst than over training (until injured) but my thumb and lead hand knuckle still cant take bare fist sparing let alone a full our fight, one clipped elbow and I'm cattled.

This weekend I did 2 x HB sessions, Sunday wanted to get quite techy on the knockdown class, lots of counters and movement as we've got awhile till the next event. Sunday PM started the 5x5 program: Have started it as twice a week so doing all five exersizes: Gotta say me, TMD Junior (lol who is 25kg heaver and 6" taller than me) and Mrs TMD started the 5x5 plan together. I can still feel the squats, dropping the weight to start sure helps form and for the other two, this is the first time they've done any soert of weights so good starting point....lets see how we go

Looks good TMD
My strength levels really improved when I started working in 3's and 5's instead of the 'normal' rep ranges that everyone told me was better.
That was in my late 40's so there's hope for us all ...

Yes I really like the 5x5 program. I gained serious strength with that.

So foolish old sod that I am I decided that even though I haven't been training that hard or focused recently I'd try and get down to weight for the BKK Regional (4kg over with 4 weeks to go so possible at the time) - no delusion of being in good enough shape to win it but just wanted to get some mat time between now and the Swedish Open I want to do, ran a 'tester' session on Monday to see where my fitness was and it wasn't that bad so I looked at my original plan form when i was intending to enter it and just broke out the last 4 weeks and hit it like I'd never been away: Monday, tester session - lots of bupress, double punching, double kicks or all out kicks, punches combo's or burpees etc all based on a variation of 3x2 min rounds broken in different ways, 15 seconds, 30 seconds, 1 min, 2 min, 6 min. Each lasts 6 min without rest - some burn your legs, some leave you drained some burn your lungs. Tuesday, AM core session + PM 1.5hour general class + half hour on the bag 30 sec on 30 sec off. Weds, AM Core session + PM Power training with my boy and our new rack! 1 hour on the bike. (Note: My 6ft Bar was too narrow so have ordered a 7footer) Thursday 1 hour on the bike in a sweat suit aka probably what I'd have to do the morning of the tournament + knockdown class.....(weight now at 71.5kG) Class was: general warm up, 6 stations: 1.5min exercise, 1.5min fight, 1.5min stretch, 1min same, 30 seconds same, 1 min same 1.5 min same. So a total of 30 fights, 30 exercises, and 30 rest/ stretch.... was going well.... I felt tight from the bike work and power training so was pushing the stretching and depressing some of the much younger hands, got into near box splits. ...but then I felt it, was about fight 25 went for a double Chudan Mawashi and as I loaded the second kick I felt my calf tighten - stopped instantly, got a cold spray on it but it has torn tell tale bruise the next day. Felt sorry for myself - limped off to buy wine and chocolate - now back to 73kG. I will learn from one of these episodes I promise! but for now just gotta focus on injury recovery...... I will be back! (hopefully still in time for Sweden in September)

TMD
Sorry to read about your injury. As someone who overtrained for years I can imagine the frustration.
You're doing too much. Your weight is decided in the kitchen and your fitness is not decided by how much you can DO, but by how much you can RECOVER from.
Hard work + incomplete recovery = injury and/or exhaustion.
But you know that already and I'm sticking my nose in. Hope you heal up well.

I know it, I know it you're right as ever - I just seem time slipping by, tournaments come up and I just wanna fight. WILL Change this attitude, it's all wrong....stinks of midlife crisis for a start lol! Got my weight about right ish so all I need to do it set a target far enough off to complete a proper training program complete with all the required steps - I was doing this for Sweeden to be fair but then just got the urge and fkd it. Oh well, back to the bar
