Did a monster week last week as I knew I was going to be at the World Champs at the weekend and generally a lot of my training is weekend loaded.
Sunday was knockdown class AM bag work PM
Monday AM hour on the bike, low resistance high pedal rate - PM Power training Normal 4x5 Gym after helping teach. I've dropped squata at the moment as my knee dislikes them - have upped my Dead lift to replace it.
Tuesday Bag work session directly before karate which was mostly bag work and sparing
Wednesday general karate class but again lots of bag work including big mit work.
Thursday AM 10 rounds of 2 min on the bike 30 press ups, 30 sit ups - PM Knockdown class
Friday.... had lots planed but got all messed up and did nothing.
This week, well I feel like it has taken most of it to get over the weekend - and no, I didn't drink it was just all that sitting about and the focus of watching such a great event takes on you - I think this is something people neglect to think about for the fighters.
For sure doing 3 fights one day then 3 the next to win it is tough - in rough terms this would be around 12-15 rounds but you add to that the injuries that compound up and the WAITING AROUND while trying to stay focused, especially over night while you know you have injuries that will still be there tomorrow, such mental toughness is unique and must be respected.
Trained Tuesday, general class but bag work focused.
Anyway the highlights over the last two weeks were the 2 Thursday knockdown sessions.
Both of them consisted of a warm up, then 25 2 min fights then a finisher of different med ball exercises, 3 types of press ups, sit ups and squats all with the ball.
To add a little variety about every 5th "fight" was not a fight but 2 mins of med ball slams.
The fights vary in toughness from me n Walshy, Jack, or Sensei going about 75-80% through the cadets and other adults at between 25-50% to sparing with my the kids at about 0-10% - I generally try and stick with the Adults but wanted to get some sparing in with the cadets off to Switzerland in a few weeks and my youngest lad.
The real highlight was over the two weeks seeing my lad train as hard as anyone, he is only just getting the knockdown bug having preferred to be a generalist when it comes to his karate training, like all 3 of my kids I let them find their own path as to me Karate is an individual journey, he has stumbled into that part of the journey where sparing and hard training is appealing to him. The highlight of highlights this week was firstly him catching me in my solar plexus while to be fair I stopped him backing into someone so I was not ready for the strike - but it caught me very clean and what I now know is he can punch!
Second was his med ball slams - 55 in 2 mins on an 5kg ball - lad only weighs just over 40kG and it's only the second time he's ever done them! Jack, probably the fittest guy in the dojo was the only one to do more at 72 (with an 8kG as all the adults use) - I stopped counting once I hit about 25 in a minute and just tried to keep going!
He was achy today but still smiling, hope this lasts as he has a great attitude and add to that some stills and conditioning and I can see him being a very good martial artist.
