I think that's my point Gary, you'd have to prove it, they'd get to regret it but back in the day you'd have avoided it. I know what you mean about out pumped up friends, I was softly demonstrating the benefits of body shots in the gym on this very large guy and was amazed at what he yelped at - guess conditioning is a great asset we often forget

I've always though the best way was "Speak softly and carry a big stick", but some of the s h i t h e a d s walking around now - even in my quaint little middle England market town - don't seem to respect the first or fear the second. Foul language and blades seem to make both quaint and out of date.
Maybe I need elocution lessons from Ros and an equalizer from Wullie.

Exactly - who would Arnie or Dolph NEED to fight to prove they was a hard b? People would just see their size and think "sod that!" Whereas I can name any number of much smaller guys who could deal with either of them yet look like they work in a bank.
Eeehhhmmm what am I trying to say.
My question is I guess how do you stop it happening before it happens but know you caused that by fear - that change of heart. Presence? Man most of these thugs are to stupid or high to recognise such a trait!

My question is I guess how do you stop it happening before it happens but know you caused that by fear - that change of heart. Presence? I know what you mean. It's a fine line though. Some of the people I've trained with over the years had menace oozing out of them. They weren't 'normal' people in my opinion, certainly not the type you'd feel comfortable socialising with. I wouldn't want to be like that. There's always some scrote that might pick up that vibe and see it as a challenge. Knowing they'd struggle in a fist fight they'd just up the anti so that 'don't mess' aura becomes a liability, not a bonus. I want that middle line. Neither the pumped up don't mess nor the don't hurt me look. Just normal with a few tricks up my sleeve and the ability to switch on as required. That's my preferred state. Gary

that's one of the main reasons i gave up door work, had a spate of young lads having a go to try and get a reputation, not even trying to get into the pub just coming up and trying to hit me. any of you that have met me know i'm a pretty genial guy, i worried about one of them banging their head on the kerb and me doing an 8-10 stretch. also hearing wannabe hardmen crying for their mummy is only funny the first couple of times.

Kind of you both. I used to go a bit and if someone wanted a fight I was happy to oblige - in gi or out. I'd like to think I'd still give a good account of myself, but definitely don't feel like a tough guy any more. As long as I can still bang though I'll keep living life to the full ... I'm not scared to go out after dark just yet. Gary

Osu!! Interesting post!! You hit home with this topic. I've been recently in two traffic disputes situations myself. Last time it happened I answered back and the guy came up to me but he wouldn't close in, just keep his distance, and yell some threats. I looked at guy in the eyes, said something like "just calm down" ... thankfully, because he was older but bigger than me. Even if I had hit or throw him to the ground it would have been very bad for me afterward. Why is it that while some guys get the pretty girls' attention, I get the lunatics? "Now they just see a Victor Meldrew impersonator and are far more likely to take the p***. I can still hit fairly hard though" Sensei Gary, I think your stare can still deter attackers and if that won't work, your wit and humour are as sharp as ever... ;D OSU!!

It's that desire for justice, and feeling that there should be immediate, strong consequences for people's actions. A way to show people, clearly and decisively, that their behavior is unacceptable. Walking away feels like letting them get away with it.
But still a good idea.
