This is my first Muay Thai fight (no elbows, but clinch and knees to head allowed) back in '97. I was still in high school at the time, my opponent is literally twice my age. I was supposed to fight somebody around my age that trained since he was 5, but he backed out due to my picture being on the poster, and not his.
Notice how "big" I was back in those days ! LOL! Anyway, my boxing was horrible, and I was so tired early on in the fight, but I had the heart of a tiger, I wasn't going to give up, no matter what.
My opponent kept on calling groin shots, and the ref was giving him breaks, not taking points away from me because he knew it was BS....my opponent was a hometown favorite and this was in Canada, not the USA, from which the ref and I are both from. Don't really want to p*** off a bunch of Canadians when you're on their home turf LOL! Anyway, the ref finally calls BS on his bad calls and I got the TKO/KO in the 3rd round.
I remember going back stage and almost passing out in the fetal position. Someone got me a slice of pizza and a coke, as soon as I had that, I was rejuvenated!
I used to practice my gedan mawashi on one of the metal ring posts of the ring in the gym I trained at, we had foam taped around it. My coach at the time eventually told me to quit doing it because I'd move the ring around so much. As you can tell, I focused a lot on my left..as years went by I became ambidextrous (had to, to be an instructor). Now I can say I have much more power and better boxing...and keep my hands up much better.
Was my first fight, a life time ago .
One funny thing I just realized is this past week the promoter of this event just contacted me to see if I had any fighters for his. Things really do come full circle in martial arts and life if you stick to it long enough.
Osu!
