About 11 years ago, I was an instructor fully on my own (apprenticed years before) at a gym known as "Tapout Gym" in Kent, WA (USA) that had local TV commercials, BJJ instruction, Wrestling....and me teaching Karate & Muay Thai.
I had a young teenage student, about 16 years old, wasn't very flexible, but he listened, and over time, became pretty flexible. Over more time, he became a decent fighter, and would listen to me, which made him easy to coach (be surprised at how many are not) for Muay Thai, Kickboxing, and "self defense" tactics I would teach.
I was a bouncer/door man on the weekends, and from my own experience, and previous self defense techniques and tactics I was taught, formulated some of my own.
One of them was a simple quick jab, hook or elbow to a full clinch. Now, it's very hard to explain how to clinch properly, but when done properly, you won't escape it, unless you know how to clinch, too. From here, I advocated a knee or two, than coming to the side while pulling down with both hands, one over the base of the back of the skull, one on the shoulder to soccer kick (shin) across the face...you move back, and pull down while doing this (I know similar things are done in Enshin). You follow through with this properly, your opponent will also be on the ground, where I advocated either running away or finishing (won't describe the latter in text).
The student I described above went to a grocery store late at night on a weekend, wasn't too late, but he was encountered by a punk in his early to mid 20s, who grabbed him, and demanded some money. Thankfully, this punk had no firearm or knife, my student reacted to do what I taught him, ending with the soccer kick, to take down, immediately about faced, got in his car and drove off.
The next day, he went back to the store, explained what happened, they had video footage of it! Filed a police report, and the punk was later arrested .
My joy in this was, I taught somebody, trained them enough to where I taught them became REFLEX, so they applied it under pressure. This was one of my greatest joys, when I first became instructing, to have a student use what I taught them in real life. Nothing big, but I still take joy in it.
On a side note, this student of mine has a wife, young son, and a nice house...is somebody I go to the range and shoot with. He also got into BJJ, and was favored to be the next big MMA fighter out of the Seattle area some years back, but had a rare genetic eye disorder....had to give up martial arts, or be blind. Looking at his wife and son, he made the right choice. He's one of my closest, most trusted friends, today.
Osu!
