I personally, haven't encountered this in knockdown karate or Muay Thai, but have in other martial arts.
Some instructors way of instructing is very complicated, making it much harder to learn a technique than it needs to be.
Years later, in hindsight, I begin to wonder if they purposely do this, in order to string somebody along, to pay for more unnecessary lessons?
Or maybe, just maybe, they themselves are clueless?
I completely understand, being an instructor myself, it often times doesn't do any good to explain to somebody the entire "big picture," that they need to really experience the growing pains in the beginning stages, so that they truly learn.
If you have never encountered what I'm talking about, consider yourself lucky, it's very frustrating. Osu!

I don't have a problem so much with my own students as I do with people who ask advice. Most people overcomplicate, don't work hard enough and make excuses instead of getting focussed. It's funny, but when I advise them to cut the volume, up the intensity and be a predator not a counter attacker, they usually think I'm short changing them and wonder off to find the 'magic' answer somewhere else ... That's why I'm not rich. I could just sell people a load of tricks and charge them a fortune. Gary

If I just told most people what they wanted to hear, instead of, actually teaching them, I'm sure I would have more students....not students that are any good, just more. I've had a few students over the years that are doing what you're describing, too. I had an x student that could memorize every little bit of instruction I said to him, but he wouldn't follow any of it, himself.... Osu!

I try to instil in everyone that you can't 'build a house on sand' (that's the only bible quote I ever use) so all worthwhile skills have to be built on a foundation of fitness and determination.
But - sadly - many want an easier way.
