Test went well last night but dislocated my finger in the process during sparring. Just got it popped back a couple of hours ago. Looks like I'll have to work around not being able to grip a kettlebell or barbell for a little while. Looks like zercher squats, glute bridges, and push-ups will be ok.

Ouch. Happened to me on my Green Belt test but luckily my Sensei knows how to reset them and he did it before it swelled up. That made it heal pretty fast.
Congrats on the test.

I assume that's a common incident with the grip fighting etc. Anything you guys do to prevent that (taping fingers, etc)? If so, any preferred methodology?

The easiest thing I found was to wear 4oz gloves.(Enshin Honbu requires Shinguards,Cup,gloves for sparring) I do that on days where I am testing lots of students.

Ouch! Bummer about the finger dislocation. How did it happen? Something similar happened to me, though it was really a finger extensor ligament that jumped the track locking my finger in a weird angle. I taped a 5 pound weight plate to the end of my finger for traction, let the arm hang down and over the course of dinner the muscles relaxed and everything eased into place.
Good luck with recovery!

Maybe it's the gripping. In my Enshin 3rd dan test I felt my finger twist then at dinner afterwards noticed it was swollen and the tip was at an angle. That took a finger splint for a few weeks as it was a 'mallet' fracture. Spoke to a judo bloke a while ago and he recognised the story. Half his fingers were twisted. Gary

Just stopping by to say hey. The Enshin group is on hold for this year. Sensei Yuji and Beth had a few big events come up such as a new house and job. I was inconsistent with my training last year and when I was ready to come back in October last year, I was told about the above. I went to a TaeKwonDo/Krav Maga school up until March this year and I'm now training in a Kyokushin dojo 3x a week. The dojo was affiliated with World Oyama up until a few months ago. Political issues which I know nothing about caused several dojos to separate and form a new orginization called Bushiken Karate. I'm just happy to be training knockdown again. Osu!
