A few of my students wanted me to come back to teach...
I told them this already, but said no, unless it's where I live, and they come to me.
While I was teaching, I told them many times, they have it made, they can walk from where they live to take lessons.
My reason for saying no isn't to "prove anything," it's because I work full time and go to school full time...with driving, parking, and the walk with all the gear loading/unloading it was an extra hour to hour and fifteen minutes of time for me to teach, where I was teaching. I know I'm not the only instructor that drives to get to where they teach, neither.
However, with my schedule, honestly, my time during the week is less and less. I could handle teaching 3-5 hours a week, IF it was somewhere within 10 minutes of where I live.
I know a few of my students aren't too happy, but I'm not going to pay out of my pocket to teach and that's what was happening, and would continue to happen with logistics where I was teaching....and, time is money. Osu!

What some students do not understand is the amount of time invested by instructors and senior students into the workings of the dojo. They just come, train and leave. Of my previous instructors, 4 of 5 are multiple times divorced. (Oddily enough those same four all have moustaches )I can understand why that is because of the amount of time necessary to pour in to the club/dojo. Without the support of family it is hard to maintain. I commend you PO1 for sticking to what's most important in life. I hope some will meet you halfway to train personally with such a high ranking dan in Kyokushin. Lucky.

Yeah. We have had to move locations multiple times now. As long as it is in my city I will make the trip.

I'm negotiating possibly teaching at a MMA/TKD school, they want a Muay Thai/Kickboxing instructor, not as close to where I live but there is some serious potential to make me consider it. I'll only do it, if there is a way where I can also teach Kyokushin, but I'm also pretty busy at is...so , I'll just have to see what this instructor wants.
With that being said, I'll be training somebody for a "ring style" rules at the upcoming Kyokushin challenge here in the Seattle area, and the event is being hosted by our own "seattle" on the forum. I'll also be training the same person for a kickboxing or Muay Thai fight shortly after that....I bring this up because I was texting and calling up some fight promoters I know today...
One of the promoters put me in touch with the TKD/MMA gym person who I've only heard of through others, I never actually met the guy. So I maybe "back in business."
The martial art dork of me wants to jump at this no matter what but the realist side of me is thinking, is it possible? How many days, and hours could I honestly put into this? Would there be time to also teach Kyokushin? ...and the ultimate question, will the school owner let me teach it, if there is even time between the TKD, BJJ, MMA, KB/MT lessons, etc.?
I have full time work and school, so it may not realistically be practical, but maybe I could pass it onto somebody else, and occasionally drop by to help, too...that maybe the more practical side of it. Osu!

By weird twist of fate, I will start teaching in a few weeks, at a TKD/MMA school not far from where I was teaching Kyokushin.
Starting out, I'll only be teaching Muay Thai/Kickboxing, just a few days a month, to help coach the MMA fighters out of the gym. The gym is set up with Wrestling coaches, BJJ instructor, and me really teaching the necessary striking.
I plan on doing Kendo and Iaido plus my full time job, school...and doing this. If this works out, and I have enough time, I'll try to at least set up a "knockdown karate club" for some of my former students, another Kyokushin yudansha, and others that want to train knockdown kumite, pad work, etc...possibly even teaching Kyokushin a couple days a week.
However, I have to see how it all works out to begin with. The owner of this school seems very nice, and I was referred to him by somebody I trust. So far, so good, who knows?
I have something else in the works, that I haven't talked about yet..and I only will, if it actually comes through.
What I like about this school is, the owner isn't egotistical enough, to try to teach everything on his own, he has instructors with a minimum of 15 years experience, teaching...and he's a student too. I wish other "new" MMA gyms would do this, instead of trying to teach it all, when they don't necessarily know it all..but who does? Osu!

Yeah those kind of Gyms are Rare. The place that Medguy teaches is like that. Good people.

I'm negotiating some kickboxing/MT fights and MMA fights through a couple of fight promoters, for a team of fighters I'm putting together.
At first, I'll do the managing and training, but plan on focusing more on managing, and having others do the training and cornering. I have a few people I know for years, that I can trust on the latter. I just got done talking to a few fighters, about them to refer any promoters that come to them, to me..because there was a small issue, with promoters trying to talk the fighters into fights that weren't really in their favor. It would be like a boxing promoter coming to a young Ali, full of p*** and vinegar, trying to get him to agree to fights with little notice, etc.
The bottom line is, most promoters, unfortunately, only care about stacking the cards, and sometimes they even set up fights for one fighter. Osu!

Once money is involved that can be the case.

As I said in another post, I let the owner of the TKD/MMA gym know I'm honestly unavailable. I told him it's not worth me just teaching a couple times a month, neither. He also asked me about being a Muay Thai "black belt" which I told him is only done by a few camps/orgs, and they're all western ones, it's not done in Thailand. He also told me he's working on his 6th Dan in TKD, BJJ and Japanese JJ black belts...so I see where this is going. However, he did hire a legit BJJ black belt to teach so I'm not sure if he understands that belt will take some time to earn. Anyhow, I think he was trying to get me to give him rank in Muay Thai...which I could, but it would take time, and a hell of a lot more than a couple of times a month, and that's time I don't have.
I was going to try to make myself available for Israel, but his work schedule is horrible. I'm going to have a long talk with him tomorrow but I'm about 99.9% sure the serious plans that him and I were making, are going to come to an end. Israel can't even train until about 10 pm at night...well, I go to sleep at about 11 pm to 11:30 pm, I get up in the morning, since I have to be at work by 8 am...and I also have this thing called, being a full time university student.
The weekends I use for more school work and time with my girlfriend. Since I don't make much, if any money from managing and training Israel, it's not worth the sacrifice for the little time I do have.
I love martial arts, but feel I'm going to need to take a break from teaching for at least until October of '14 when I'll be done with school for a while. I do want to focus more on the managing and promoting/throwing tournaments side of things, though.
Like I've said before, being an instructor takes up more time than being a student, at least it has for me every time.
Another long time friend and student has talked to me recently about earning his black belt from me...expecting me to teach him where I was before...where it has logistic failings, and we don't even have any space reserved/rented....I told him no in the nicest way possible, unless he can find a place near me (which I know he cannot) so I don't have to drive 20-25 minutes each way, teach him...and come home for full time school. I know he's upset, but I'm quite frankly a bit more upset that he doesn't get it why I called it quits to begin with at that university. Osu!

I think in any group of people you get a special few that put themselves out and the rest just come along for the ride. Funny thing though. If I ever have to cancel the dedicated ones understand 'family first' and take it in their stride. The unreliable ones are the ones that feel let down. I should always be there in case they decide to show up - apparently. Gary

So with my better half's current health concerns and getting my house squared away, teaching for me is delayed. I have a couple of children's parents that want me to teach their children. I'm amazed by how much stuff I accumulated over the past 4-8 years...and my garage is definitely proof of it LOL! I'm going to put in a makiwara and some tire platforms to beat on here in the near future for myself Osu!
