I became an instructor at a very young age, probably too young, because in all honesty it gave me an ego. I wasn't ready yet to have the title as "instructor," not because of lack of skill or ability, but I lacked the maturity. There are people today that knew me when I was a teen and in my early 20s, who still hate me, thinking I'm still the same arrogant A**hole.
Anyhow, one of these people, who was horrible, but was the type that always wanted to be "part" of the instructors and fighters group in the gym. You all know what I'm talking about, every dojo/gym with real fighters and instructors always seems to have a "group" like this..and always has those no matter how old they are, that want to be a part of said group. Well, shortly after the time I left the first gym where I was the assistant, and would come back every once in a while with my own students, there was a Man, quite a few years older than me who really wanted to be a great fighter, and "belong." However, he was horrible, but I'll never forget him because he was disillusioned enough to think he "belonged." He had a bad attitude, and I can't even stress, had and has no business teaching anybody.
Well, the other day I find out he's had a gym in Idaho (USA) teaching students, most of them are kids, but still....he has NO business teaching anybody, anything martial art related. I suppose I shouldn't be surprised because over the years I have seen many McDojo teach kickboxing, MMA, etc. and gyms pop up, or clubs with "MMA fighters." Even at a local Kyokushin tournament a year or so ago I saw one such "MMA club" taught by instructors who have no experience to be teaching anybody...and I'm sure they think they'd get some "easy experience" fighting in a Kyokushin tournament, to where none of them did well.
My point is, MMA isn't exactly a style, it can be trained as one, but it's based upon a ruleset for the most part. How would any of you feel if a MMA or Kickboxing/MT instructor started teaching Kyokushin with no experience? I have seen Kyokushin instructors teach kickboxing/MT..and some teach MMA that have no experience fighting in the latter, too. With that being said, my point is, every MMA, Kickboxing, Muay Thai, etc. instructor has just as much right to teach Kyokushin if Kyokushin instructors with no experience in MMA, Kickboxing, Muay Thai, etc. are teaching the latter. Now, yes, I think that's stupid and ridiculous, I'm making a point!
I also know quite a few Kyokushin/knockdown karateka with experience fighting & training in MMA, Kickboxing, MT...Filho Shihan, Pettas, Feitosa, Quinn shihan, Darren Chan, and so forth...but I also know just as many names that I won't name, if not more names, that don't have any REAL experience but just watch videos and get together with people and train it.
Just an FYI, in the world of kickboxing, Muay Thai, and MMA an instructor with no fights in the latter is considered a joke. However, the jokes are usually so naive because they have no experience, they don't even realize this..ignorance is bliss .
Osu!
