I love how some things never change:
"Those who scrap in in the streets and bars are fools. They fight only in gangs like cowards and lynchers. If your pride's hurt, offer them the chalk. Do it properly. See how many are prepared to take ye on fair and square with a crowd watchin'. That's the real test of a man" - Claret and Crossbuttock.
True isn't it? Any muppet can have a fight. All it takes is a few beers, a victim and some mates backing you up. Anyone can be a weekend warrior, not everyone can compete.

On the other side of the coin (I don't condone purposely getting in street/bar fights!),there are so many set rules in competition, that I wouldn't say it means somebody good in competition will be good in a "real fight."
I only say this because I have seen those good in competition, that "freeze up" in a real life situation. I know that YOU, Gary, train some common sense and "reality" in your students, so I'm not worried about your students...what I worry about are the gyms/dojos that only focus on competition, ignoring the reality.
With that being said, I believe every black belt, if they're able bodied, should have some competition experience (as long as they have the time to put into it). Competition is non-compliant, and forces you to react under pressure; competition usually will catapult somebody much quicker on their path. Osu!

There were very few rules in the original prize fighting save you couldn't hit a downed opponent.
But I was more referring to the fact it takes guts to get up there and compete. (Far more than getting drunk and sticking a glass in someone's face)

What i like is when Bart steps onto a mat his personality changes from child to "business" and when he steps off he is a child again, when i asked him how his first term at high school had gone he said, " I really like it dad, the older girls keep cuddling me and say i`m cute!" and that`s the way i want people to think about me!
He has kept his training to himself.
