This is kind of an alternative to A, B, and C class and something I like a lot . Shinkarate, basically kickboxing in a karate gi, also known as "gloved karate". If you have been paying attention to the K-1 in Japan lately many fighters from the shinkarate circuit are starting to transfer over and the transition IMHO is fairly seamless. Here's a K2 shinkarate match and a lot more on youtube: Basically it goes from K5, K4, K3, and K2 depending on your age and experience. Kids start out in K5 with full bodygear, headgear, shinpads, glovves, etc. while adults with enough experience do K2 matches and typically only wear boxing gloves but I have seen shin pads in some K2 matches. The "flavor" IMHO is more like knockdown karateka that also use boxing which I actually like quite a bit. Here's some kids doing a K4 match: Here's a really good kid's match: Osu!

Having a system like this IMHO makes for better fighters in the long term.

I agree, I don't see why all of us from around the world can't get together and follow one system of rules for "kickboxing"? A, B, and C or shinkarate K-5 through K-2, I don't care. Osu!

Heaven forbid having a K-1 rules kickboxing fight and calling it K-1 rules LOL! Osu!

Researched Shinkarate after find this video on youtube and was directed here!
Should have just done a google site:knockdownfighters.com Shinkarate
Thanks for the original write up PO1. Exalted.
I like this concept
Would help others from my old dojo transition towards full contact kumite with the eventual inclusion of face punches.

Thank you ! I first found out about this in '97, because my first Muay Thai instructor competed in a K-2 event in Japan at Osaka-Jo (Castle in Osaka, Japan), for Chokushinkai, and that's how I obtained a shodan in Chokushinkai, because he was a sandan at that time. Osu!

Osu! What a unique and rare opportunity to have that type of instruction in the US. Muay Thai is starting to pick up here in the South which is nice. The community is growing. I wish for the days of unregulated interclub (Friendly) competitions. Just out of curiousity, why did you MT guys in the 90's and 00's have to spoil it for the rest of us ;D JK. Are those 18ozgloves? I have a pair of 16oz Boons I use for sparring that don't look anywhere close to that size.

I have a pair of 16oz Boons I use for sparring that don't look anywhere close to that size. Unfortunately, I was only about one of three students that had any interest in Chokushinkai, and the only one to receive a kuro obi from him. A lot of this was because of my previous karate background, but I had a hard learning curve ahead of me from shito/goju ryu, learning Muay Thai and shortly after Muay Thai learning Chokushinkai. In Chokushinkai we did a lot of knockdown kumite, MMA rules, and Shootboxing rules. Looking back, I'm very surprised he didn't get that many people interested in teaching Chokushinkai. Over here, there is a huge interest in "kickboxing" and MMA. I'm seeing a return of interest in Muay Thai, but many of the "Kru" we have here, minus one or two, are at all legitimate, IMHO. The same instructor expressed interest for some time sending me to Japan to train directly under Kiyotaka Kato Shihan for Daido Juku, and coming back here to teach it..this was 98'ish. He even had a long talk with my Dad, and things fell through..rest is history. Long story short, I ended up moving on, and separating myself after this fell through. No used crying over spilled milk . Osu!

Wow that would be like saying, "Hey I got this great opportunity for you to invest in a company. No they don't sell fruit! It's something called a personal computer." Imagine how different the landscape of Karate would be in America during the 00s.

Wow that would be like saying, "Hey I got this great opportunity for you to invest in a company. No they don't sell fruit! It's something called a personal computer." Imagine how different the landscape of Karate would be in America during the 00s. What he told my Dad and I was that he was going to pay to send me to learn under Kato privately, and become an instructor of Daido Juku...than come back to the USA, partnering with him, also teaching Daido Juku (I really didn't know what DJ was until 6 years later!). He had long talks with my Dad, that I needed to get really serious, since I was coming up on high school graduation. He even had a room built in the Gym for me to literally live at the gym!!! He also had Kato corner him for some of his fights at Japan, like that K2 fight he had at Osaka Jo... So this all actually seemed legit..and I was of the mind, that if a martial art instructor said soemthing to me, that meant it was going to happen. I literally was planning on moving to Japan to do this after high school graduation, while friends of mine were making college plans, plans of joining the military, etc...that's how believable this former instructor of mine made this all seem. I was very upset for many years afterwards that none of this came to be, but now, I've accepted it, learned a lot from it, what to never do to my own students. I now talk to this instructor from time to time, I give him the resepct of teaching me much, but I'll never forget. Osu!

Italiantank, I could try to ask a few people, that may know. I do know that Haru, of HMC (he was with AMC with Matt Hume) in Hawaii had some involvement with K2, K3, etc. shinkarate fights over the years, not sure if he still does, or not. I'm pretty busy with work, school, etc...so if I don't get an answer to you in a reasonable amount of time, please PM me, to remind me LOL! Osu!
