"If you haven't earnt it, don't wear it"
News of a certain President being promoted to 8th Dan (despite not knowing his kata) seems to be a hot topic.
My view is simple. He should politely decline.

And with his current policies towards one of his neighbouring countries I don't think anybody should be " gifting " this man anything no matter what your ulterior motives are .

does anyone know the reason behind even WHY this was awarded? Maybe there's some generous governmental grants for the organisation seeing as how Kyokushin ( no matter what group ) is so hugely popular in Russia or that could just be how my mind works .

that's kinda my thoughts too Slaine It's one thing to be awarded a token 1st dan ( which still irks me ) but to award someone an 8th dan strikes me as suspicious.

Whatever else he may be I doubt anyone believes Putin is stupid.
He understands 'the game' and must smell arse lickers a mile away.
This might rebound on the organisation involved spectacularly if he now writes them off as void of all moral worth and instead favours groups that do not try to buy his patronage with fine embroidery.
But I may be wrong ...

Well anyone that has been around in martial arts will know what this is about really. Nothing special. Move along.

I'm not too sure about his own morals , I once heard about him stealing a retired American footballers Superbowl ring worth in the region of 30,000 dollars because he always wanted one for his collection , it took the poor guy forever to get it back even with the involvement of the US president .

Let's keep to the grades issue. I'd feel no happier if they gave 8th Dan to the Dalai Llama. It's not about Putin it's about using grades as currency. A poke in the eye to the grafters of this world. Maybe it's relevant , maybe it's the grade Putin requested for whatever favour done seeing it's the grade directly below what Hatsuo Royama himself is , sorry I find it very hard to take my cynic hat off these days.

If you can get preferential treatment from Putin by awarding him an 8th dan, that is the best use of the karate black belt ever.
