Any of you had anybody get MRSA or know somebody that has? It's a nasty type of staph infection. I've had a couple friends get it and one got it when he was in the Army with me at jump school...we were actually bunk mates too and thankfully I didn't get it. The other crappy thing about it is once you get it you have a high chance of having it happen again. I won't post nasty images and videos of it, you can look that up yourself. My friend in jump school that got it had his left calf muscle swell up about 3x the size of his right. He was put on a morphine IV and had his calf muscle cut open so they could remove the infection. He had it happen again in a special forces training exercise known as robin sage and it was so bad they cut open his forearm in the field. Really, the only way to avoid this in martial arts is to make sure you shower after a training session and the floors/mats of where you're training are washed before/after (or both) a training session. I never had MRSA but contracted a wart infection years ago in BJJ (Brazilian jiu jitsu, not a weird sex position sickos!) and the doctor immediately asked me if I wrestled. It was easily removed but ring worm is another thing you have to worry about. I know in the last 8 years a lot of "combat athletes" have gotten MRSA bad (Kevin Randleman comes to mind) is why I bring this up. MRSA is not something to be taken lightly, neither. Ah ha. Just my kind of thread! MRSA is indeed a Staphylococcal infection - it's a Staphylococcus aureus that is resistant to a few more antibiotics than usual (although still treatable). S. aureus is part of a human's naturally occuring bacterial flora and it is perfectly possible for a person to be colonised with MRSA and not have an infection. Anyone taking part in skin-to-skin activities may acquire someone else's S. aureus. Generally, skin infections caused by MRSA are no worse than those caused by a sensitive Staph - they are usually not too serious, but as your friend discovered, they can also be pretty horrendous. People always think they 'caught' it from somewhere, but it is often caused by your own skin bacteria. I work with MRSA all the time so I'm probably riddled with it! This is the one you should worry about : www.hpa.org.uk/Topics/InfectiousDiseases/InfectionsAZ/PantonValentineLeukocidinPVL/PvlFAQ/You can't avoid bacteria in Martial Arts or anywhere but having said all that, good hygiene is important and keeping wounds clean and covered is a good idea. PoO, did you have Herpes gladiatorum? It's a well reknowned infection among grapplers.

All I can remember is the doctor saying something like "mollusk....." to what I had. It started out as one "pimple" or what I thought was a pimple on my inner left bicep and grew rather quickly and a few others came up. I'm talking 4-6 days I had some big pimple/warts in my inner bicep that wouldn't go away when I tried to "pop them" so I went to the doctors right away. Hasn't happened since and this was about 10 years ago. I had no other symptoms and it didn't hurt, no sore throat, head ache, etc. I'm sure if the doctor told me "herpes" I would have freaked out and remembered that . I just read up on herpes gladiatorum and don't think that's what I had but I'm by no means 100% sure. The doctor used "liquid hydrogen" to remove the warts on my bicep. I remember this because she said "watch this" and threw the rest of it that was in the cup on the floor to watch it go "poof". I think it was liquid hydrogen anyway, I'm sure you would know better then me. Anyway, they have never reoccurred since and I wasn't told by her to watch out for another outbreak or anything of that nature. Osu!

Molluscum contagiosum! As the name suggests, highly infectious.

I have friend who got some sort of fungus from the mats at his BJJ gym. They thought possibly MRSA at first, but this stuff lasted for 6 months or longer, they finally dug out the spot on his arm. Ugh, grose.
Poor guy could not have any beer until it was comletely gone.

My mousemate has it, and it keeps coming back, over and over and over again. It appeared after he had his appendix removed in the hospital. At first we thought it was a spider bite. Thank the gods I didn't get it, but it's something I worry about. Sometimes people bleed at my dojo, but it gets cleaned up. It's scary! And gross, and painful, and ugh!

"liquid hydrogen" to remove the warts on my bicep. It was liquid nitrogen, not liquid hydrogen.

Strange how things come up. I read this yesturday and today I was told that my disabled neighbor has MRSA and is now in the hospital. His mom had it when she died last year and he has had it this whole time. I don't know how many times I had been over there helping out and now I am worried becasue I really dont know a lot about it.
I am gong to visit him tomorrow. He is in ICU.

Thanks Ross, went to visit but unfortunatly, they had transferred him to a bigger hospital. His poor kidneys shut down.
