I suppose it depends on what one's objective is. To compete in a marathon or triathlon, long cardio sessions are pretty much what you'll have to do. On these boards, I imagine we are all training for better performance on the mat and in life. Of the few of us posting workouts, none appear to be long cardio sessions, so maybe we're ahead of the curve.

If you look at the article as a whole it's saying that excessive cardio workouts will not necessarily help you lose weight, it's more about what you put in that matters. I wholeheartedly agree with this. I wonder what Dr Cooper would prefer his friends to die of? Of all the people I know who have died, I'm not sure any of them died of anything other than cancer or heart disease (and none of them did excessive aerobic exercise!).

All true but most of the general public and the Gyms that have more paying members that don't show up than do all think CARDIO is the fat burning answer.

Where's the actual evidence that Dr Kenneth Cooper actually recanted his assertions about aerobic exercise?
A google search I did showed no evidence of him actually having said that - but quite a few articles stating he had - none of them had any direct quote or evidence of him having said that or asserted as much either....
I think excessive aerobic exercise is obviously bad for you - but I think the same can be said for most things.
Oxidation plays a huge factor on long term health and is the main cause of ageing and degenerative conditions & wear/tear that is caused later on in life.
But this isn't just exclusive to running but all aerobic activity in varying degrees including martial arts training which is pretty aerobic intensive.

I think it is more pointed at those that do multiple cardio sessions a day 45-60 min blocks 3x day is probably not the best way to "burn fat"
Better to do some Strength Training and then maybe a 30-45 min cardio if you need it.

Oxidation plays a huge factor on long term health and is the main cause of ageing and degenerative conditions & wear/tear that is caused later on in life. Well, oxidative stress does play a part in aging and age-related conditions; it's a complicated subject oft seized on by woo-mongers. Although hard exercise probably does increase oxidative stress, it's thought the body also compensates by upregulating other systems and mechanisms. Like I say: complicated subject, and probably not something to worry about for most non-professional athletes.
