Passed away 2/14/2016
A legend in Kyokushin.
RIP.
My Sensei trained under him in New York in the late 1960's through the mid 1970's
One quote he mentions..
"Don't MISS CHANCE"
Shigeru Oyama would say that meaning - Work on your skills, Don't miss your opportunities.

In the mid 1980's, his dojo in the Village, and T. Nakamura's in Chelsea were the biggest in NYC. Shigeru Oyama's dojo, before he went his separate way, served as a finishing school for the up and comers. When he did go his own way, Shigeru Oyama retained the knockdown karate of Kyokushin, while Nakamura followed another path. I studied with both, briefly, during that period. Entering Shigeru's Oyama's dojo put butterflies in my stomach every time. When I lived in Japan, my sensei, a former All Japan champ, mentioned visiting Oyama's dojo in NYC and feeling the same sense of awe. Time is cruel. RIP
