We do these moves in karate, and it's anyone's guess what's going on. Typically, you use an osae uke coupled with nukite, or you might see upward and downward osae uke with some forced breathing and you are wondering to yourself what the hell is going on. The same with mawashi uke. You'll see they are essentially the same thing.

We do this very much the same in Enshin but the end game is slightly different. We don't go for a joint lock or submission. We use it to take down and finish or run away.

You got a good thing going with Enshin. Other karateka are not so lucky. They've got to dance, frown, and shout between the punching and kicking because there is no plan for the stuff that's not punching and kicking.

People see Enshin as a modern style but - having been involved for while - I see it as karate was in the 70's.
I used to travel around a bit with a part time job fitting sun beds in sports centres etc and always took my gi. If there was a club training I'd jump in for a session so I was exposed to lots of sparring rules and styles.
The clubs I enjoyed best incorporated grabbing and take downs to compliment the strikes, no matter what it said on the gi or no matter what their competition rules required.
So yes, we in Enshin have it good, but I can't help thinking lots of other groups lost their way.

Many times, the lost ones don't even know they're lost. They seem to be engaged in magical thinking, and magic does not work.
