My elbows love thai pads, but hate heavy bags. I know that we are supposed to make contact with the tip of the elbow, but when I make contact on the heavy bag it results in a nice bag burn. If I dig in too much it feels like I am making contact with the forearm. I am using a synthetic leather heavy bag so I do not know if it makes a difference versus a genuine leather heavy bag. The problem with the bag burn occurs with diagonal and upward elbow. Horizontal elbows and spinning elbows are fine. Thank you in advance. Osu!

I would definitely ask Dent.....he helped me out with my elbows! Especially with the delivery, and i work a heavy canvas bag, a canvas sand pad and a makiwara with rope. Sounds like your technique may need some tweaking and your positioning needs some observing........but, I seem to suffer the same if I am doing it for to long.....then my elbows are sore for days.

any extra movement on contact will give you grief, ie burns etc, if you are doing a lot of bag work, I would suggest elbow pads. even hitting through your gi sleve can cause you burns. IMHO opinion if you hit with the forearm, no problem

Elbows take a long time to get conditioned but you need to tweak them to go "deeper" into the bag with your elbows. This may mean slowing down doing the technique a bit because you're going "fast" and skimming with the tip of your elbow too much which is causing the burn.
All of this is much easier said then done.
With all of that being said I've bloodied up my elbows when i started out in MT going on the bags just as you described. Osu!

Osu!
Thank you all for your response. At the moment I am more inclined to do elbows with a pad holder than the heavy bag. He doesn't seem to like elbows too much.
Will definitely try a LSD session for elbow work.
Thank you again.
