What do you hear?
I hear a lot of things. Most of it it garbage though. (..I am too tired,I have no motivation..I have no room..I have no equipment..etc..)
If you want it you will train.
DO I really want to get up early and run my dogs and workout? Maybe not at first but once I got in the routine it comes natural now.
You got to get over the initial hump.
Sure sometimes I don't want to go to the dojo. I do though. Unless I am sick/injured,have an appointment,or the Family needs something I am there.
That is how I came to be where I am at now and I am not stopping here.

"I have four cats and every time I try to practice kata at home they all immediately get underfoot"
Oh wait that one was mine
Honestly, most excuses are just roundabout ways of saying "I am a lazy bastard and can't be assed to put forth the effort required", and that doubly goes for any excuses I'm making that don't involve my knees trying to explode again.

One of the comics here - Jack Dee - invites the audience to text him jokes or comments during his gig which he reads out at the end of the show.
I'm thinking of doing that with some of the excuses I get ...

I myself would like to use the excuse: "Sorry I couldn't make it to training, Angelina Jolie stopped by and asked if I wanted to teach her some moves".
Please don't tell my girlfriend I said that LOL. Osu!

Hey Po1 that's a good excuse any day!
My excuse is not really an excuse... more than a demand from my family. I can't wait until my kids can go to the Thai Boxing gym with me or the dojo.
Will give my wife 2 - 3 hours to herself to breathe and me the opportunity to train hard.

I don't count family as an excuse. That is a responsibility. Just like your job or source of income. I am sure you could turn it into one but I know you are not the type Sota. Also I don't count injuries either. Sometimes you get hurt and it needs to heal or you need to adapt to a different training methodology.

The order of priorities has definately got to be Family and work before Karate.
But that doesn't mean people can't plan ahead. I worked shifts for 31 years but still managed to train/teach regularly by swapping shifts so I could get to the dojo. These days I rarely miss.
It's all about "How bad do you want it?" If someone's coming out with twaddle or constantly booking other things on training nights, they're just kidding themselves.

If someone's coming out with twaddle or constantly booking other things on training nights, they're just kidding themselves. Gary Funny you mention that Gary. I have been attempting to train, and scheduling myself to do so, and getting slammed with so many other priorities, such as Family and Work, that the month of April has me in the dojo and dojang only 3 times!! I blew a gasket this past weekend with one of my sons hitting me with his agenda when he knew I had plans to compete in a tourney! Every night is another concert, social gathering, music lesson, after school help, American Football practice, clothes shopping...etc.etc.etc........my wife has her daughter to concern herself with and my childrens mother lives 100 miles away and only sees them once every 10 to 20 days. Now couple that with running my own company and having a 13 hour day daily (weekends are for the kids exclusively) I have found myself questioning whether training seriously is even in the cards anymore. But, I havent given up on it....just very, very frustrated. I have been trying to begin training at Dents Dojo....again, it is one thing after another. I have found that fighting with the family and employees only breeds serious resentment and an infatuation with disrupting my ambitions on their behalf.......But in the end....it really is all excuses. If I wanted it bad enough, something would be sacrificed.....and that i maintain as my sticking point. Osu!!

Know how you feel Joe, it's similar for me here Busy busy family life, and a wife who is an out of hours community nurse. Sooo whenever she has a night off i'm out training, lets just say i'm not very popular at the moment. Plenty of "you would rather be at the dojo than spend time with me" etc Problem is the only thing i can see being sacraficed is my training

Funnily enough "Yes" doesn't seem to be the best answer to that one ...

They're never happy unless they're giving it to you in both ears.
Might as well go training. It's quieter.
