Here's a nice headlock counter that I personally have used in the past to gain superior position.
Osu!

I'm posting this because I know in some karate dojo I have been in a throw is sometimes taught as a counter for the head lock. Well, if someone does a head lock properly, throwing them will not work, it will only dig that head lock in deeper. Sure, on a compliant person in the dojo you can do a simple hip throw if they put a weak head lock on you.
I also don't advice sacrificing yourself in a type of osato gari falling on top of them if they have you in a head lock or rear naked choke which will more then likely result in more injury for you not the individual putting the choke/head lock on you. Osu!

All sorts of bad things can happen. I do like sacrifice throws though (head not locked), but only on a mat.

Looks good on the mat. Dont think i'd use that in the pub, rolling on broken glass is no fun at all Direct attack of the opponents family jewels is my usual escape from that and other head locks.

I can remember practicing this drill and being defiant about the application. The idea that an opponent was going to roll in the direction you take him was off base. What we found most of the time was they landed on top of you, while cranking your neck and gaining a ground leverage position.
A few notable options were obviously the jewels....but often the slacks held a gap that caused a barrier.....so if you could get it good if not....
Eye gouge will release the torquing giving you the option to power out
Grab the hair, (if they have any) on the back of the neck and rip!! Extremely painful and evokes an immediate hand release......again power out
Finally.....the achilles is yours for the taking, your shin/knee can lean hard and disturb the balance while inflicting serious pain...now you have a knee down and they are looking at a face first into the floor.....you will easily break the hold and be in position to do a leg lock break!
Now if you are the size of me or wullie or senshido........lift that sucker up and put that lumbar coccyx on your knee in a hard way!!! LOL!!

I must add when I grapple it's usually people around my size or smaller then me. I do agree with Joe that this counter probably wouldn't work against a much larger person. Osu!
