Osu! This Saturday World Oyama Karate will host the 35th Annual American Cup Knockdown Championship. They usually have fighters from all over the U.S., as well as Japan.
Both Hangtime and myself will be competing in the knockdown portion. All together Yoshukai should have around 10 or so fighters fighting in semi and knockdown. Will post a report(hopefully good news) on Saturday night.
The butterflies in my stomach have already become active...

Well, Saturday did not really go as planned.
The semi knockdown divisions had some very tough and spirited fights. To my knowledge there were 3 knockdown styles that attended the tournament. They were Shidokan, Yoshukai, and Oyama Karate.
Yoshukai had around 6 total fighters in the event. 3 in semi-knockdown and 3 in knockdown. Calib blue belt in Yoshukai from Pesacola, Fl placed first in the childrens beginner division. Craig, blue belt from our dojo placed 3rd in the mens semi knockdown white and blue division. There were some very tough fights in this division. The winner was a white belt from Shidokan in Atlanta, Ga. He had some very fast legs and kicked quite a few folks in the head.
The knockdown divisions were divided into lighweight and heavyweight. Lightweight was 165 lbs and under and heavy weight was 170 to 220. The 2 fighters in the heavyweight division were hangtime and a monster from World Oyama Honbu. Hangtime got in there and mixed it up. He lost via ippon on a chudan tsuki. He later said that he felt like he had been hit by a sledgehammer. You did good Hangtime, go get'em next time!
There were 8 fighters in the lightweight division. Myself and my training partner Matt were the only 2 that were not from Oyama Karate. I had the first fight and faced a figther who won the World Oyama fighters cup tournament this past July in San Fransisco. I had seen him fight a few times before, so I new some of what to expect. He came out with a wide array of kicking techniques. I felt like had I my hands up good and we were trading some shots. Then out of nowhere came a knee. It caught me on the temple and I went down. I was not hurt and was up in around 5 seconds. So, I lost via ippon on a jodan hiza geri. I am a little dissapointed. Just gonna go back to the drawing board and try and get him next time.
Matt, my training partner. Won his first match against a long time champion of Oyama Karate. It went the distance and he won on judges hantei. His second fight was against a 16 year old from Oyama. Thats right, I said 16. This kid is way more advanced than anyone his age and rank. Matt was winning the fight and on his way to the finals when he through a chest level puch that glanced up and caught the young man in the chin. He dropped instantly. We immediately knew that Matt would be dq'd. Saiko Shihan Oyama came up to us and said that he knew the punch was not intentional, but the other fighter could not continue. We understood the decision.
All in all, a pretty good day. Would have been nice not to have gotten ko'd, though...

Osu! Thanks for the report Yoshukai! Wish I could have been there with you guys. Mr. M was giving me updates on our end as they came in on his phone. We are going to have another JKS training session Saturday May 14, after the BB pre-test. I hope we can all get together often for some training over the next several months.
