Yoshukai Karate was founded by Soke Katsuoh Yamamoto in the early 1960s. Yamamoto started his karate career in the Chito Ryu style under Chito Ryu founder Tsuyoshi Chitose. Yamamoto eventually became Chitoses top fighter and protige. The Yoshukai school officially broke ties with Chito Ryu in the early 70s.
It was during this time period that Yamamoto worked with Mas Oyama of Kyokushinkai to develope the rules for Japanese full contact karate tournaments. Yamamoto sensei's karate has always been based on practical and powerful strikes. He is known for the being the first person to bend an aluminum baseball bat with his shin as well as for fighting a full grown bengal tiger to the death with only a bo and sai.
Today, as with most groups there are quite a few organizations that use the Yoshukai name. Most of these organizations do not practice the knockdown style of fighting that Yamamoto helped to pioneer. Yoshukai is a worldwide organization with schools in Japan, USA, Canada, and Germany.
The World Yoshukai Karate Kobudo Organization(WYKKO) is the official organization recognized by Yamamoto. We currently hold one knockdown tournament per year in Oxford, Al called the Superfights. We also compete in World Oyama Karate Tournaments a couple times per year.
