I felt I could've worked harder for my shodan, but that still didn't stop me from having a nice steak dinner with my sensei and my family afterwards. when you say " I could've worked harder" do you mean that you didnt give it your all? I did give it my all. I just felt I could've trained harder on my kata prior to my test. And not to mention we didn't really go over fighting a lot before the test either.

I guess I "cheat" when I test somebody for a rank. I prepare them at least a few weeks before hand and have them work on everything that will be on the test.
I had a sensei in the past that had very high standards but would do stuff in tests that I don't remember him ever having me do in training. I vow to never do the same thing to my students. Osu!

P1 that would be so frustrating to test and not know of a reuirement like that. We have mock tests leading upto the test.

When I grade my students, I tell them anything I have thought them is fair game. Even if it happens to be "advanced" for there grade. Most of the test is straight forward, I do include things not seen before in combinations and moving combos to test ability to follow direction. It will also show if they get the basic techniques. Most folks can't think about how to block and what the next 1,2 or 3 techniques are at the same time. That part does not fail someone, but does give feedback on what they have learned. The last few weeks get some special attention to testing needs but I try not to focus on it, as I think it can lead to giving the impression that some things are only important for grading.

Osu Seattle!
I was trained the same way and I know Senshido has some surprises like you describe in his tests. Once the basics are ingrained into somebody I yell out techniques for them to do and see if they can do it. Right now I'm taking baby steps with that and have to demonstrate a few times but it's coming...
What I mean is my old sensei would have you or expect you to be able to do techniques that were never shown by him or taught by him at all. Was so many years ago I remember that I didn't think this was a bad thing kind of like how I actually believed him when he told me how "easy" it was to beat a trained boxer with karate LOL. Not that isn't possible but he made it sound like an orange belt could beat up a professional boxer and yes, I was crazy enough to to believe him but I was a young at the time. Osu!
