Well I thought I'd seen it all but last night was the worst yet. Youngster in for a trial session. Nice kid, tried hard. Seemed to enjoy himself although he hadn't a clue how to kick or punch. Sounds pretty normal for a beginner, but this lad was 10 years old, he'd been training for 6 years and wore a black belt with a red stripe ... I'm honestly not exaggerating when I say he didn't know how to make a fist. His dad's face dropped when I said he'd have to start from white belt again, as he's "Going to do his black in November" Here's the killer: He's been on a "Black belt program" of instruction for years with a local McDojo. His dad asked how much we charge and the penny started to drop. He'd been paying £36.00 a month for three one hour sessions and a test every month. When I explained our fees he looked uncomfortable as he just knew he'd been paying over the odds for crap. But he still said, "I'll have to talk to him. I'd like him to get his black belt first and then train here" WTF? As he left he thanked me and said, "If he's a black belt does he still have to start again from white belt?" Gary

its a worry... I've had similar, I've had a tai kwon do "black belt" kid come to train with me, and had no more knowledge than a novice, had another couple of freestyle people train with me for a few weeks... terrible technique... one was a shodan, and the other was just about to go to their old club in Newcastle to sit their sandan!!! I wouldnt have given her a 8th kyu!!
I sometimes have doubts that what I'm teaching may not be as good as others, but then when I see these people it make me happy!! ;D

Agreed
This kids club was under one of the bigger names in UK karate.
Always a silver lining, it's given our juniors a real boost. They might not always like my methods but they could see our blue and yellow belts were far better than this black/red belt.

aye, i have even had a 3rd dan freestyle adult come to my club, when we started sparring, he told Stuart (who was then a 5th kyu I think) that to watch out because he would probably kick him in the head 3 times before he saw it coming.... anyway we started sparring and I hear a thud, when I turned round the 3rd dan was on his backside on the floor, from a shita tsuki... oh sweet memories!

Was that not the same guy that told you that you were teaching a technique wrong, you then hit him with it when you were sparring? He couldn't train for about 3months after that lol!

Yeah we have had that too. It is sad when someone comes in that thinks they were being trained well and they really were not...

I started to type "unreal", but I totally believe it. I talked about my class with a neighbor who has a son in some other style. She went on and on about how she'd love to have him somewhere closer to home, etc, blah, blah. She asked if her son could retain his rank; I said "depends" and explained. She said "...he's so close to his black belt...I just don't know about starting over...but we'll come try it out" --I'm still "waiting" One of my students received a Tae Kwon Do (ATA) black belt before he started training with me...I'm fairly certain he sees the differences OSU!

Believe it or not o have seen 2 really good ATA tkd black belts but the thing about ATA is it's literally a franchise anybody can buy into. Meaning that not all ATA dojang are close to the same.

My oldest started kyokushin as a 10th kyu white belt after having earned his Black Belt in TKD (WTF) He new right of the bat that it was different and never once expected to be given "special" consideration. the only thing he was afforded was the chance to spar and do kumite. That was reserved for 8th kyu and on.

Nice to see others have the same experience. The entire skill set didn't transfer directly over to knockdown (obviously), but I do have to say that there are some specific skills that he previously learned that do give him a leg up. IMHO, the turning back kick and spinning hook he uses much more naturally and effectively in kumite than the other kids his age who have trained just karate. There's another older kid at the studio who is similar (moving from TKD to knockdown). He's noticably more comfortable and fluid throwing kicks and transitioning between them during kumite. He also has a great sense of timing and distance for his age, compared to the more "rhino fighter" style you tend to see with many knockdown kids. Good and bad, I guess.

I hear ya Gotapex!!
It is amazing to see the fluidity of the TKD folks when they start adapting to knockdown. Watching my kids who have all done TKD do kumite, is a pleasure. They move in and out and with the striking they learn in kyokushin, they do very well. They never stand around trading punches, and will use a knee to block a fist (I watched a dojo mate fall to the floor after a punch to me sons knew block).
One of the biggest things that I see are people coming in to the dojo, cant punch or kick but want to grade right away. "When do we get a different belt?" my answer "when you grade" how often is that every 6 - 12 months.......depends on you!! "Oh thats to long"..........why train at all, just go out and buy an Affliction or MMA, Krav Maga or any shirt and front with that like all the other idiots do.

I've taken more of an interest in buying Kyokushin, Sabaki Challenge, knockdownfighters.com, etc. shirts then Muay Thai, MMA, Affliction, etc. type of shirts because everyone wears the latter but usually the only people that I see wearing knockdown karate apparel are people that actually train and have been there! (how's that for a run-on? ) Osu!

LOL
The last twat I had an eyeball to eyeball with was wearing a "TAPOUT" T shirt.
Why bother training? For £9.99 you can wear a shirt that proves you're a tough guy.
(He wasn't. When I explained softly how things were going to go he legged it)
