Like most instructors I often get calls for advice. "I'm thinking of doing karate, where's the best place to train", etc etc. Ignoring the fact that I run my own dojo I try to give impartial advice on different styles, always suggesting people look around before signing anything. This mornings call took some beating though. An ex-member called me for advice on which club to join. As he left (I thought) on good terms I told him he was welcome to return. "No chance, your training was too hard" "So what do you want then?" "To enjoy it" "I understand, but most people would say they don't enjoy it AT THE TIME, but feel good afterwards" "Well I didn't" "Fair enough, in that case I wish you well in your search" "Thanks. Any advice?" "Yeah, just one bit really. Make a F***ing effort" He put the phone down. Gary

Leaving a dojo because the training was "too hard" has never been a reason. If the training seems "too hard" I know I'm "too out of shape" at the time and stick to it. If anything, I know I'm in the right dojo! I like that you told your ex-student how it is, Gary. I'm surprised at the nerve of your ex-student to ask for any suggestions from you . Osu!

I'm too soft, that's my trouble. That's why people feel free to ring me even years after leaving.
It's funny - or tragic - that most 'problems' in life could be really helped by applying those four simple words, yet people get offended when you say them.
Oh well ...

Wow. I could see it if he was limping each day and banged up to heck, but I know that was not the case. Sounds like someone who is a slacker.

In fact, at least he was honest. Have you ever noticed how very few give up because training's too tough? They always find another reason don't they? I changed my job You changed the times You changed the fees etc etc Most of the above and hundreds of similar ones are given if someone drops out. Whilst they might be true in some cases, lacking moral fibre is true in far more. I might make that my standard phrase now for the faint hearted and weak willed. Make a F***ing effort ... Gary

I wonder what the average person thinks that takes up martial arts. Do they really think it should be easy, requiring little effort?
I suppose the ones that do explain the phenomenon of all the 10th+ rainbow colored yudansha. No, I'm not calling every 10th Dan undeserving, just most! Hanshi Steve Arneil is one of the very few deserving, and I think most of us can agree on that! Osu!

You know all it takes is 2 weeks training and a montage then you can beat the world. ;D lol!
