Had my first grading for five of my students today.
It went well but I see some things I need to work on with all of them. The primary thing is knowing their Japanese terminology, all of them were confused at one time or another.
The other thing was their kihon, aka, ido geiko needs some work but I don't have standardizes/systemized ido geiko, I often times make it up right then. The same was done to me by my sensei, and I was able to do it..and in fact, I consider that an integral part of my karate training when I started. The renraku is soemthing they all seem to do better at, but I was able to confuse them a few times with that as well.
However, I'm glad I got them confused and made them sweat! They all finished their rounds of kumite well!
My syllabus goes blue, yellow, green, green2, brown, brown 2, and then shodan. Typically blue and yellow will take 9 to 12 months to get to but a couple of them trained private to semi private with me over the entire summer so I double graded those two, to yellow. One of them had previous martial art experience and my female that tested has missed very few training opportunities.
For blue they need to do a minimum of 3 rounds, yellow is 5. I think those that tested for blue did 5-6 rounds...
For the first green is 10, 2nd is 15, brown is 20, and brown2 is 25...obviously I place an emphasis on kumite. This is to get them to be able to do 30 rounds for shodan.
The blue belt is a "shared" student of Seattle's and mine. He started out with him but due to convenience of him being a nursing student at the university, he trains with me for the time being, however he hopes to go back to Seattle's dojo and/or Shihan Adams' dojo. I don't think it's fair for him to train in the dojo and keep him at a lower rank then those he's just as good at or better. He's actually the best one at kihon/ido geiko. He's a humble student that felt awkward testing, so I let Seattle know ahead of time of my plans. I think we reached a fair agreement and this goes to show that regardless of organization we can all get along *gasp*
Here's a pic of all of them that tested
A little bit off topic but if any of you are ever in my neck of the woods, you can come train with my students and I. Please wear whatever rank you are, regardless of style or organization as long as it's knockdown karate or something similar! I only don't allow "softer styles" not to because I don't think it's fair for a brown belt from "x style" to do kumite with a blue belt that can kick their butt under knockdown rules. For the same reason, I wouldn't go to a TKD dojang expecting to be able to wear my black belt.
Osu!
