Please keep us informed about changes. We haven't even picked up the gear yet, and would like to avoid doing so if it becomes unnecessary. This is the response I got from them, I asked for clarification about gloves. I have followed up for final determination regarding the shin guards. " Yes, most fighters wear mma style gloves, or the cloth covered karate fist covers. We don't allow fighters to wear cloth boxer's wraps, or boxer's tape to strengthen hand and wrist. We also don't allow punching bag gloves that have any bar or grip in the hand. No brands in particular. All divisions must wear head protection, and hand guards. One point is still under discussion: The advanced knockdown divisions may be able to wear shin/instep protectors as an option, but not mandatory. For Semi knockdown, the shin instep protector will be mandatory." Duong has maybe about 1.5 years experience total counting his Muay Thai experience. My other students competing only have about 5-7 months and will definitely not be doing ring style since I haven't been training anybody in that, yet... My question was, our shared student thinks Shihan Adams allowed full clinching in knockdown rules last year? I was surprised by this and in all honesty am hoping this is the way it will be from now on...however, I'm not holding my breath. I work quite a bit of Muay Thai type clinching and Sabaki challenge "same side" set ups in partner drills and encourage it in kumite at times. Should be a good time, regardless. Osu!

I'm not positive we'll be sending anyone anymore, since these rules are much closer to semi-knockdown than knockdown. I guess we'll be playing it by ear. Interesting about the wrist tape too. Lots of KD fighters seem to use that in the tournaments.

That answer was for the Ryukukan tournament. The question on the Regional tournament for the "ring style", as you know now I had to forward on to the organizer as the rules tend to vary. For the knockdown, clinching not allowed. But putting a hands on the shoulders without grasping hands or holding is ok. Sorta Enshin like. Last year was a sudden change that none of us knew he was going to do.

According to the rules page for this tournament on ramtown karate website, you can tape the wrist, just not wrap the entire hand like in boxing/mma.
It appears that the only difference between the knockdown division and semiknockdown is the way points are scored. Semi in this tournament is the safe knockdown division. Both semi and knockdown will wear pads.

Here is there reply...
Hi Sensei, The change will not be made this year, we will stand by our published rules. Ryukyukan US rules Shin/instep protectors will be required for all divisions. These can be the traditional cloth protectors, or the muay thai style. We are discussing making the pad change for next year for our London and California tournaments. Our June Ryukyukan tournament in Okinawa Japan has always been no pad in the Full Contact division. Our Okinawa tournament drew 501 fighters last June, including Semi divisions. I feel that contact karate competition is becoming more popular worldwide, partly because different organizations are working together more each year. I'm getting a great response this year from a variety of dojos.

Oh! I met these folks at the War Games. They said that in Japan their tournament doesn't use all the gear, but here it does because of insurance and stuff. I met the woman who won the (4 entrant) women's semi-knockdown division at World Oyama this year. She told me she preferred the helmet, heh. Anyway, some of our guys might go and watch. I know that I would like to, if I can afford it.
HOI, SEATTLE! How long will you be down here, if you go? Will you be here for any of the weekdays? I know you'd be welcome to come visit my dojo on Monday or Wednesday night. I'm sure you would be Tuesday or Thursday night too, but that class is more protocol-heavy and would appreciate a call ahead.
I'd love to meet other folks from the forum!

Osu!
I just noticed on the Ryukyukan International website that SenseiD(Duval Hamilton) is affiliated or used to be affiliated with Ryukyukan.
Maybe Senseid can offer some more insight on the rules for Ryukyukan tournaments.
Osu!

I train with the Kancho of the group in a week long seminar at my dojo about 5 years now. Havent heard anything from him since." Osu!

Seattle got 4th place. I do know he only had 1-2 minute rest in between fighting and his next fight, tough break, huH? A fight that went 2 rounds, too. His opponent got to rest while he was fighting... Here's some videos that our own Evergrey took: youtu.be/1hLJfsbh90Myoutu.be/Ays058Oudh4youtu.be/tjXLg4OSkJAyoutu.be/XBlDkcF8oukyoutu.be/RmTIo02f2DYI am not too keen on no hiza geri allowed. I already don't like no "Muay Thai clinching" but I have learned to live with that...but no hiza geri? c'mon... Seattle stepped up to the plate, on short notice, flew down and fought in the tournament. This is a testament to the type of training he does on a regular basis to be in shape to do that on such short notice. Osu!

I was satisfied with the tournament. I got to meet Evergrey and another person from K4L while there. That was pleasurable.
Regarding the rules. While I didn't like the no knee's, it was not a surprise so I can't complain. It seemed the judging was pretty consistent, granted I was only really paying attention during my division. Only thing I did not like was if the punch came towards the face it was a penalty. (I did receive a chui/warning for it). During the rules meeting Kancho/Hanshi of the system did clearly explain the rules and expectation, it was pretty clear. Only thing I can complain on the rules was the use of gloves with palm bars. I was told no palm bars, I saw plenty of people using them, I think one or two of my opponents had them.
The competition was tough, I think they all had me by at least 10 years of age. But I expected that as well. The ring was small, i didn't think it would have much effect, as I thought of it like the small area we get to fight in during class. Not the case, especially not using knees to stop someone coming in on you. Only if I was better at moving off line. I am not used to fighting with headgear, that caused some visual impairment. But nothing major.
The challenges of the day. Timing of when I was going to fight. The weigh in, rules and fighters meeting was supposed to be at 1pm and fighting around 3pm. I got told it was delayed to 130p, no biggie. I think it was 2p or so before we weighed in, supposed to go over rules but that got delayed for some reason - no explanation or announcement. Fighters meeting finally around 5pm, my division did not start until probably 6p or so. Had I had any idea it would be that late I would have went and got lunch. Granted issues come up and delays happen at tournaments, but I sure could have used some lunch.
I would probably go to the tournament again, or at least be willing to encourage my students to attend. I haven't been to a tournament with kata in a long time, it was interesting to watch, especially the differences in how techniques are performed.
My wife really liked watching the kids fight, but hated to watch me! (She is totally supportive though)
