What are some of the standards some of you have for dan grades?
Have some of you seen the standards go down, or go up?
Under Senshido, the shodan standard is 30, nidan is 40, and sandan is 50 man kumite ! That's after doing all your kihon, renraku, tameshiwari, and kata. To me, that's a solid standard, and one I'm trying to mirror with my own students.
I require a 3 man for blue, 5 for yellow, and 10 for green1, 15 for green2, 20 for brown1, and 25 for brown2, and 30 for shodan Same standard for nidan, and sandan. The last grading I had, the two that I graded for blue ended up doing 5-6 rounds of kumite, anyway. My focus is on making somebody that's a competent fighter for in the dojo and in the streets. To me, a good offense is good self defense..if it has to be used. The youngest I'd promote somebody to shodan is 16, but that would have to be somebody that trained with me at a young age or somebody with a serious amount of prior experience...18+ would be the "norm."
I have seen a mix, in my honest opinion, of standards going up in some places, staying the same, and even going down.
I won't name organizations, dojo names, or names of individuals, but some of you would be very surprised at what is known as a very legit organization lets slip through the cracks. I know, I'm a bastard teasing like that, but you won't get it out of me.
So what are some of your opinions on the standards, and your own requirements for rank? What are your age requirements, too?
*let me explain by what I mean a competent fighter in the "streets." I don't want any of you to think I'm trying to create some hooligans LOL! I mean, if they ever had to use the karate I teach them, that it will work in "real life," and not just in the dojo with a compliant partner!*
Osu!
