This is now the home of my training log: Monty has done the main write-up. I couldn't keep up with the count for mawashi geris, which really frustrated me. How do you get your feet to pivot so quickly, I was trrying to watch the black belts' feet but couldn't tell if they were pivoting or just putting them in the right position from the get go. I didn't dwell on it too much, I'm still doing 20 kicks over the bed every time I have a bath or shower, so it's got to get better eventually. I didn't want to stay for sparring tonight either. Bit of a confidence issue really but I probably should have just done it. I was thinking to myself that I would be standing in front of someone: "hajime" and I just wouldn't know what to do.

Ros. I still work on my Mawashi Geri constantly! So don't feel bad about that at all. I still want mine faster and stronger. As far as the sparring. I think we all go through that. Sometimes ya need a break. Maybe work on some Sonbon Kumite(preset 3-4 step combinations with a partner) Osu!

Even the strongest have mental blocks sometimes, so the best way is to dive in little and often. Focus on what you're going to do to them, not on how you'll respond.
You'll be fine!

Thanks! Yes, I think just getting in and doing it is the best way forward. Every time I've done that before I've felt much better afterwards.

I have had this in the past, not feeling too confident before sparring. And funnily the times i've pushed myself to get in there have been some of the best sessions. Osu

Another Saturday, another training session! Well, it was a busy old class today (for a Saturday!), which has good points such as having a variety of people to work with and bad points. We started out on the bags in pairs, one would work for 20 seconds while the other held the bag and then swap for the next 20 seconds. We did maybe 7 or 8 minutes. Then we took it in turns to be attacked and then perform a takedown. Two people were defenders and it was pretty fast and furious. Up, down, up, down, up, down really saps the energy (feel free to make up your own jokes here ). The rest of the class was spent taking turns to be one of the two defenders but working on specific takedowns: suri comi nage, defending against a knee kick, a zig-zag sweep (like black belt kata) and a push and then hook sweep for mawashi geri defence. Some of these were quite new for us, so we will probably be adding them in to our Tuesday training. Tabata to finish; alternating spints with press-ups, v sit-ups, jumps over mats and finally burpees.

Dojo trainingMonty decided to give his knee a rest tonight, so I have to try and remember what we did. It must have been quite a lot because I'm knackered! Kihon; x 10 strikes, blocks, combinations; x 20 kicks (including some keages we don't normally do). We got into threes and made a triangle, each about 2m away. We took it in turns to grab the left person's left shoulder and mawashi geri, then as quickly as possible to the next person to grab their right shoulder and mawashi geri. We followed that with hiki mawashi and hiza geri. I'm not sure if we did a minute or two minutes on these drills but it was quite a killer. We stayed in the threes to do a few rounds of one person in the middle being attacked alternately by the other two, focusing on using sabaki. Then we paired up with some pads and the padman had to attack and then offer a target with the pads. Several rounds of this. Sparring drills next; one side attacked for 20 seconds, then the other side and finally alternating attacks. We finished up with some light sparring. It's quite frustrating when you've been working on sabaki but then as soon as the sparring starts, you just feel yourself tighten up and go back to linear moves. I was trying really hard not to but it just seems to happen. D'oh. Anyway, this is for you, Gary:

LOL
That's brilliant Ros, thank you.
One of those rare nights for me when I just didn't want to be there. Far too much on my mind. Hope it wasn't too painful!
Here's to Thursday. He should be on the mend by then so I can focus on the job in hand.

Gym dayI'm taking it easy with my back today, so we didn't wear gis so as not to tempt a takedown session! We started off with 10 minutes on the cross-trainer. Then onto the bags/mats for: front, reverse, shovel - left leg front x 1 min front, reverse, shovel - right leg front x 1 min Monty on left, me on right - 3 mawashi geris into bag x 1 min Monty on right, me on left - 3 mawashi geris into bag x 1 min press-ups x 1 min Jumping in and out of a big tyre x 1 min mawashi geri, ushiro mawashi kake geri into a pad. I'm stilll having trouble getting my knee bent on the first kick, my leg wants to come up in an arc. I tried not throwing the kick and just bringing the knee round - fine. Then I did the whole kick into the air - fine. Then I tried with the pad - back to arc! Oh well, I'll keep trying! White, blue, yellow and green belt kata. We were just about to go and do some bench presses and got beaten to it by some teenagers. Curses. So Monty did some kicks on the bags while I did some stretches for my back. On a different note, too much baking (Ferrero Rocher cupcakes, anyone?) and not enough will-power is not doing my weight much good. To bring back some discipline into my diet, I have decided to lose a stone in the next 3 months. I'll record my progress here weekly as everyone was really encouraging and I found it really motivating last time. Watch this space.

You can lose a stone easy peasy if you put your mind to it. I'll help. Just bring all baking to our house and I'll have my small army eat it for you Gary
