When I was 18-19 (turned 19 a few months after graduating HS) I had my first full time job working loss prevention. Well, I was young and dumb and felt the need to work the craziest jobs I could. The nature of my job had me working just about every grocery store in pierce county, WA (Tacoma, Enumclaw, bonney lake, sumner, graham, etc.). Well, due to my young age and the fact I even looked younger then I was I caught many shoplifters by the fact half the time they practically would try to steal right in front of me...
At a store in Spanaway, about 3 minutes from where I'm now teaching, go figure, I see this "crack head" or "meth head" looking guy with a basket full of groceries that keeps hanging out by the coffee drinking free coffee eyeing the door. I'm thinking, he's going to try to run for it so I try to play it as cool as I can but he ditches the basket but I'm like "f this guy, I waited for a good 10 minutes on him, I'm going to get him for the coffee". He runs from me knowing something is up and gets part way in the car to which I jump in, this point the driver of the car is trying to "shake me off" my feet are dragging while the other guy is trying to push me off but i'm determined. So what do I do, I slam the driver's head into the stearing wheel and grab the keys and punch the guy trying to push me out, the driver cooperated.
I hand cuff the idiot who would have got fined for $2-3 worth of coffee and charge him with assault since he was trying to push me out of a moving vehicle.
Because of this the company I worked for decided I deserved to work the most dangerous areas in Seattle and Tacoma from then on out so here I was given a bullet proof vest but no gun because I wasn't even old enough to have a concealed weapon yet. I was very good at that job but it made me decide it wasn't in my character to be a police officer, I have too much of a temper. Who knows, too, I was lucky nobody I ever chased down didn't have a gun, really wasn't worth the pay.
Out of boredom I half considered doing this part time again a few months back. Glad that boredom went away, I still didn't like the times I had to bust parents stealing food to feed their kids and still not sure if I made the right choice.
Osu!
