Lots of instructors do the right thing, but there are those that definitely are not being good role models.
Here's one example, my brother and I trained with a professional fighter/instructor when we were in our teens, a guy that lived off of his purse from fighting and money from running a school.
This individual would often have my brother and I come into his office and drink kool aid and rum with him, go to movies, have spiked drinks in the theater, come back to the gym and "spar" drunk in front of others. Shockingly, nobody knew but us...there were a few times my poor Dad would pick my brother and I up, and we'd be throwing up and make some lame excuse why, when it was because we were drunk.
Now, I don't hold a grudge against this instructor for doing this with us, but if I was a parent, I would be beyond p***ed if an instructor I was paying money to for my kids to learn from was getting my kids drunk under age.
I remember after my first Muay Thai fight in Canada, a fight I won, but I was limping bad from, my instructor gave me a bottle of rum after the fight that night. Not a bad gesture, but I was a junior in high school at the time.
Years later, with my own students, 99% of them university students, many of them not legal to drink over here, I told them, I know they're drinking under age and i"m not out to get them, but that I'll never contribute to any of them drinking under age. I was no angel when I was underage to drink, most of us were not, but I think those of us that are instructors teaching "minors" should definitely not contribute to minors drinking.
Osu!
