That was a pretty good documentary. If you get to explore any FMA, or any of the other arts of South East Asia, you will find a great many similarities. It's no wonder Bruce Lee and Dan Inosanto got along so well together.
I put a link in the spear kata thread to a Kali school in Tucson. Let me know what you think, MMX.

Yeah I saw that school and there in another guy that teaches Modern Arnis which is interesting to me. I will probably check both out at some time in the near future.

Still waiting to hear back from the guy that teaches Modern Arnis. He only has one class a week so that will be easier and it's closer to my house.

Cool. I trained with a modern arnis guy in my silat class over the weekend. The styles overlap, especially with passing and knife work.

I've had a few run ins with Arnis/Eskrima...
Funny thing is, my first time I really encountered it was in BJJ, because of the instructor being contracted to the Army for "combatives," the combatives at fort lewis at the time did a bunch of Arnis. This was very basic, and it didn't interest me much at the time for whatever reasons.
I had another run in due to a school where I was paid to teach, they had an Arnis instructor, who was under the lineage of Kelly S. Warden (off topic, but I used to date Kelly's niece, small world, I know! LOL)
What I didn't like about this instructor was he tried to convince all of us that everything he did in Arnis could be done barehanded, and was better than any karate style.... I of course didn't agree with him, and he only wanted to demonstrate this "cool" ability of his when I would throw one technique that he'd tell me to throw. Sweet, but in real life, people don't fight like Van Damme, I can do the same thing too, and look awesome.
Instructor wouldn't spar me to prove to me he was right, I didn't stick with it long.
Now, I know some green berets that heavily believe in it, and have been practicing it for years, and I trust these guys a lot. I'm still waiting to be convinced...due to some of the questionable high ranking Datus and crazy lineage, it's hard to know who to believe...sort of the same problem that Krav Maga has, IMHO.... Osu!

With arnis, aikido, and any other art where you use open hands to grab, parry and work the magic, it's my impression that many of the instructors haven't the experience of free fighting. That's not a criticism of the art, just the individual. I look at FMA, Silat, Judo, Sambo as skills I can employ. They won't do the fighting for me-that's up to me.

I'm not saying Arnis/Eskrima are bad But I think, unfortunately, kroddy folk, American Kenpo folk (which have good and bad folk) also incorporate it, and than you have the spend a weekend seminars and become a certified instructor folk that are now instructors of Arnis/Eskrima... Unfortunately, I've seen all of the above happen with Krav Maga in the USA...where there are, in my honest opinion, very few legit and experienced instructors of it. On the west coast, I only know of one, but I know of 20+ that say they are Anyhow, I hope you have some good stories, tips, and etc. of this, maybe change my mind a bit about it. I'm always open to learn something new, that works! Osu!

It was really interesting and fun.
There was the teacher and 2 other students.
He mostly worked with me on things and since I had already learned the 12 strike pattern from the Modern Arnis book we skipped ahead to some more advanced stuff.
I worked some double stick patterns with him and then we did single stick drills. Counters and defenses.
Last we did knife work. Some of that was a huge eye opener and I can see why FMA is the go to for knife fighting and defending.
I will probably meet up with them regularly depending on price/schedule.

Cool! Don't forget the eye protection. Getting stabbed in the face with training knives can suck.

Awesome! Thanks for sharing MMX.
Stick and knife fighting seem to be the most practical weapons training/defense out there. My sai just doesn't fit very well in my back pocket. Damn skinny jeans.

I've been in contact with an active duty Army Ranger that teaches Arnis near me, due to my current schedule, I can't attend, but after the beginning of the new year, I'm going to give it a try. The last person I tried to learn Arnis under tried to use too much smoke and mirrors, IMHO, and I doubt an active duty Ranger would, so I'm looking forward to it. Osu!
