Nice article on the Ross training site: rosstraining.com/blog/2009/09/30/ancient-weight-training/It's like a lot of things in life, we always assume the modern ways are best but even a casual delve into history shows people were very adept at making the best of themselves. I saw a nice way of putting this (on diet) and I think the same holds true for training methods. Imagine holding a toilet roll in your left hand. Pull all the sheets off until you get to the last one. That LAST SHEET represents about the last 10,000 years of mankind while all the rest is from the very first recognisable humans. Now tear the tiniest strip you can off the last sheet and that's about the last hundred years. In that space of time we've seen most of the modern sports science evolve. Can we be SURE that modern methods trump all that came before? As for 'ultimate' martial arts, I'm willing to bet Spartans, Vikings etc etc would have done just fine in the cage ...
