There are other places that use the "Goshin Kempo" name since it's sort of a catch all to mean a lot of different things..Goshin jitsu plus kempo, bleh.
Years ago, I wanted to find a nearby dojo to train at, so I came to one that I was willing to join but they had a one or two week trial deal, so I was like what the heck. After one or two classes they hired me, and no, I never studied the art before.
The owner was very nice and still a friend of mine today, the same with his son.
I didn't walk into this dojo telling my entire background, claiming to be a black belt, etc.
In many ways this dojo was very Americanized but what I did like is that they encouraged the students to train practical and hired me to teach Muay Thai, and had an instructor teaching Arnis, and I eventually took over the Adult's kempo/karate instruction, as well. I even got my former student to teach BJJ (Gracie Barra).
I even ended up dating the children's instructor for a while...
So, with all of this being said the only thing I'd recommend when checking out a different style's dojo that you haven't trained before is to not walk in as a braggart, throwing your rank(s) in their face, and so forth. Go in humble, since it's not your dojo, and your skills will speak for your rank. A belt doesn't give you special powers, but if you really earned it, than it's obvious you have some training.
I have another experience where I wanted to train at another school because I wanted new sparring partners. When contacting this school the instructor at the time called me a liar when he asked who I trained under and got very confrontational with me LOL. It was funny when he called me a liar because I was the assistant to that instructor he said I never trained under....
Osu!
