What's up with your knee? If you have a knee injury, it probably isn't a great idea to do much running, you don't want to make it worse. Can you elaborate on kata study and share with us what you learnt? To be honest, I strained my knee during one of the previous workouts. It is better now after some non/low-impact work. I held off on the running and substituted swimming when the problem arose. As far as kata, I am practicing all my kata to maintain my ability level while learning a new kata or two here and there. Since I no longer am bound by the teachable kata from my previous school, I am expanding the kata repertoire. Primarily, completing certain kata families such as the kanku family and passai/bassai family. When I study kata, what I am doing is learning the technical skills and combos associated with the individual kata. Afterward, I use Dr. Schmeisser's and Iain Abernethy as reference material to break the kata into applicable and street usable bits. The school I cane from was called Ro-Ken after my instructor Robert Kendall. The characters associated with Ro-Ken can be interpreted as Street/Road Wise. Since our background is Kyokushin from the 70s, our philosophy is to end that fight with each and every technique including the meta-steps and in-between moves. So when you ask what I have learned, it really depends on which part of which kata.
