I hear quite a variety of excuses within my schools also. I do the same as Gary... I point out that we all have challenges but it is those that overcome those challenges that rise up. After all, "Being a success is far harder than being a failure - and very worth the effort."

Absolutely.
If things are important to us we find a way.
If not, we find an excuse.

If really depends if the criticism is justified, if it constructive or if it is just a winge. When I do get frustrated is when you try to do the right thing, try to help, try to part of the team and just go with the flow even when nobody listens and you're not convinced it's the right way to do things. Then when it all goes up in flames they're all, "why didn't you say something!" I did, you didn't listen, you knew best coz you wanted the glory - now take the steaming pile of whatever the hell that smell is as testament to your brilliance. Clearly this can be related to someone who you advise need to follow a certain training plan to achieve X goal, be it regular dojo attendance for gradings or extra curricular stuff to prep for a tournament - you can only guide and advise them you cannot do it for them or hold their hand to make sure they do it, they still need to see it as their work = their success. Sorry, bad start to the week lol. In the dojo I like to feel I'm approachable although I was informed recently that some of the kids thought I hated kids, till I did some one to one sessions with them and they realized I'm actually a nice guy . If you think something I've asked you to do has no merit, you are right to ask for an explanations - just stop putting your hand up every five minutes questioning this that and the other, save it and ask me during the cool down otherwise we'll get little done.

I feel myself heading back to bus driver coaching: "This is where I'm going. If you want to go there, get on. If not, get off". As Bill Cosby once said, “I don't know the secret to success, but the secret to failure is trying to please everyone” Gary
