Interesting article. Modern karate is the way it is after passing through two filters (Anko Itosu and Gichin Funakoshi), who successively took a mix of Chinese and native fighting arts, and made them safe for school children. Silat and FMA, are, I believe, what karate might have looked like had it not been institutionalized for grammar school P.E. and character building purposes.

Well even FMA in recent years has been toned down.
Before they could embrace it they had to standardize it. FMA before that(1940's) was very rough.
Overall though yes it is still more direct application based depending on the Teacher.

I've been preaching this sort of stuff for years, and posted this on my dojo's facebook page 3 weeks ago, or so . I believe for anybody near black belt or above, they should know somewhat the history of karate's roots, but I will also say, it doesn't affect your fighting ability one bit neither. If I had to choose, I'd always choose the capable fighter over the karate historian.... I know an Arnis/Kali group that uses bolos around Fort Bragg, the members are all active duty or veteran green berets, though . Osu!

FMA got toned down when they started using sticks instead of bolos. ;D Yes and no. Sure you can't cut with the baston but the movements they made after the transition to the stick are painful for the receiver...

There was an article in Blitz mag the one with Judd Reid on the cover. PO1 I think you said you were receiving a copy. But in the mag is another persons take on these 10 principles that were contained in the original letter from Itsou Sensei to the Japanese government.

Judd contacted me within the past week, he's been busy training a student(Mohammad "double tap") of his for the upcoming WKO tourny in Japan, but assured me he's still sending me the magazine . I have to say, Judd is a great guy and I'm hoping with his upcoming DVD, that he gets more of the recognition I truly believe he deserves. He'll, he completed the uchideshi under Sosai Oyama, a feat very few can claim! Sorry to get this thread a bit off topic...now back to the regularly scheduled program! Osu!
